Hi Everyone,

I am currently IP for severe Complex PTSD. My pdoc suggested today that I try having a Stellate Ganglion Block injection into my neck. The research is looking good. It shuts down your 'fight, flight, freeze response and can last for years. No bad side-effects, only risk is being under anaesthetic, which I have been fine with in the past.

Now I am very interested in any one else experience with this injection. To have my hyper-vigilance shut down would be awesome as I am sure you will all agree.

In the next few days I will meet the specialist right here in hospital. I will be talking cost, and worst case scenarios. If I agree I will have it done next week. The procedure will be fully covered by my insurance but the doctors may have gap fees.

As I have Bipolar also I am posting this in both forums. Hugs for all who are struggling at the moment. I hope we all find some peace soon.

Hey Wander. I have never heard of this treatment option. It sounds like you have a good strategy for gathering information before you meet with the specialist. I'm grateful you have your phone so that you can do the necessary research ahead of time.

Your experience is quite debilitating and a solution that would offer extended relief sounds very promising. I hope this turns out to be something positive for you or a good next step on your road to feeling better. Keep us posted.

I just did a search on the Cleveland Clinic which is a true source of legitimate medical research and testing and I’m not seeing anything about it being used for ptsd.

I just see where it is used to help block numerous pain conditions.

Do you have a link to a source ? I’m very curious about this

Here is an interesting article (not medical or academic journal, but it summarizes things well):
Stellate Ganglion Block: SGB For PTSD Treatment

Here is a legitimate medical journal paper:
Evidence Brief: Effectiveness of Stellate Ganglion Block for Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) - VA Evidence Synthesis Program Evidence Briefs - NCBI Bookshelf

Trick to finding medical journals:

Go to Google (as you normally would), and type (without quotes) "PTSD ganglion +site:.gov" or "PTSD ganglion +site:.edu"

Using "+site:.gov" tells google to only search government websites, while "+site:.edu" tells google to only search academic websites.

Most FDA stuff is published under www.[some-website].gov, which is why it's good to search for ".gov" websites.

Thanks. It is a relatively new treatment. No double blinded tests are being done to confirm/deny its usefulness in PTSD. I read a few unpromising articles, but a further source got results of up to 70% people who got long term relief from hyper vigilance. I’m desperate so I will try anything with some science to back it up. I will try and post my source once I find it.

Thanks Blue !!! A couple of the links I just can’t open but the ones that do are very interesting..

This looks very promising I hope further studies are being done. This could be a miracle for so many of us with PTSD !!!!!

Effect of Stellate Ganglion Block Treatment on Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms: A Randomized Clinical Trial | Anesthesiology | JAMA Psychiatry | JAMA Network

There are a mixed bad of results online, but when it works it works very well. Further study is needed. I’m the next couple of days I will speak to the medical specialist. Anyone have any good ideas to go in with, good q to ask? My #1 Q is; cost? If it is affordable I will give it a go. It seemed to have few side effects, and as long as the person injecting me hits the right spot( it’s located by x-ray.

I will keep you all up to date. If this works for me I will be so thrilled. Having a calm mind and body are the most valuable things one can have.

I don't know much about it, but it seems like they are starting to use it for veterans sometimes. I found a factsheet from the U.S. VA and it has a link to a video describing it in case you'd find that interesting. https://www.va.gov/HEALTHPARTNERSHIP...BFactSheet.pdf

The SGB injection was originally given for pain, so pain doctors are a natural for this. The VA is doing research. There has been an astonishing toll of PTSD of course, on military personnel and contractors in war zones. Great hope for PTSD and CPTSD now since other treatments like EMDR seem to have such spotty results. I told my friend , a contractor in Afghanistan about it.
They are also using deep brain electrical stimulation for stubborn depression.
My mom had ECT eg electroshock reatments for depression decades ago, so all of this isnt completely new.
