Today I had an epiphany, or may have had.
I think the reason I so often judge myself to be low or mildly to moderately depressed is that I'm subconsciously comparing my state to a long hypomanic episode I had years ago. This leaves me feeling low relative to those months of hypomania when actually at a base neutral emotional state. Or so I perceive it now. I am feeling low for no reason and do not want to believe that it is any form of depression. It is easier to look at myself and say, "Well, next to hypomania I am a bit down, but in reality this is just middle of the road." Does this make sense? __________________ >< |

I think this could definitely make sense. I also think sometimes for myself my mood is okay, but I am just a little blah on life, or a little down or bored without actually being depressed. So, like neutral, but a little flat and could use to switch things up in my life a little.

This makes total sense. I'm naturally hypomanic (when I am well).

I can certainly relate, Daonnachd.
My psychiatrist has twice said that he thinks my "baseline mood" in life has been mild hypomanic. I think he is probably right. I will say that since being properly medicated, that supposed baseline has calmed a bit for me. Though it took a while to accept this, I now recognize the calming as a good thing. Yeah, many wouldn't, but insight has allowed me to recognize how my behavior is more acceptable than it used to be. I do still sometimes have long periods of mild mood elevation. Especially in the spring! I must be careful not to let it escalate since I do have bipolar type 1, and can get full on manic. |

Thanks, everybody, for your perspectives and feedback. When I originally typed that up I felt I was delusional and talking in circles so it's really good to hear your experiences and affirmations. Thank you.

Seems pretty rational to me. Good for you though for checking your thinking. I think it is important for us to remain humble and open to feedback. Great example for us all. Thank you!

Sure makes sense to me. To me, one of the trickiest aspects of BP is figuring out what my *real* mood is. I've been told by my psych team that my normal is a mixed state of mild manic/mild depressed. I agree. So whenever another mood happens, whether lower or higher, it's difficult for me to assess.
I do find, however, that many times I'm attempting to compare my own mood to what my idea of a generically normal mood is - and I'm discovering that it's not truly possible to do that. __________________ |
