I applied for SSDI in November of 2018. I was denied, of course. So I hired a lawyer. I did allll the bureaucratic steps of obtaining necessary paperwork and had a hearing on July 31st. Yesterday I received a notice telling me that I have been awarded SSDI. I am so relieved! My hope is that with the back payment, I can buy a car. I currently drive a 2002 Saturn SUV and the poor thing is falling apart.

Oh, super. I know what it’s like to drive a twenty year old car, I hope you find a sweetheart deal and get a much newer car. It’s such a relief.

Thank you, I hope so, too. I don't know if I'll have enough $ to buy a car but I'm sure hoping to. I've never owned a car that was newer than 11 years and chronically breaking down.

I'm so glad it worked out for you. And in only two years, you'll get Medicare, which is worth its weight in gold if you are otherwise uninsured. If your income is low enough, you're probably eligible for Medicaid and food stamps as well. It's amazing how much easier life is when you don't have to worry about trying to work with bipolar symptoms flaring out of control. It was even hard for me to work when I was well, because I never knew when the proverbial other shoe was going to drop. Freedom!
