Do any of you have migraines? Do they affect your mood? Is it a temporary change in mood, or a trigger for a mood episode? Do you have them more frequently in certain mood episodes? If they affect you during your menses, do your menses affect your moods as well?

I get migraines too. Check out my blog (link in sig.). Use the search function and enter "migraine" and some interesting articles should show up about migraines and bipolar.

Yes! In fact, I missed work yesterday due to a migraine.
I get them monthly, and sometimes at random. I plan to ask my doc if there is a migraine med that’s safe to take and/or for other remedies. Ibuprofen doesn’t cut it any more. |

I don't get a lot of headaches. They are pretty rare for me. However, before each of my episodes I had days of headaches that would not go away. It started as pressure in my brain stem area each time and it progressed to pain around my temples. Headaches are a huge red flag for me.
I rarely get what I would consider unbearable migraine pain though. I had a few in college and the years after, but I haven't had one of those headaches in a while. |

My dr prescribes Sumatriptan for migraines. It works if you catch it early but if it gets horrible it doesn't. I used to use Rizatriptan which works so much better than sumatriptan but my insurance quit paying for it.

The triptans work fine with the bipolar drugs I am on. Some of the bipolar meds also work as prevention for migraines.

I get them every now and then. I remember having a significant reduction in them when I was on topamax, don't know why I'm not still on that one because it helped with weight loss too. Yeah, migraines put me in that agitated depression mode. No fun.

I’ve had constant migraines since I was very little. They’d come on strong and make me sick to my stomach. When I was 9 my doctor sent me to the mayo to rule out tumors and other factors. Finally when I was in my mid 30’s there was a med that worked. I forget the name but it was injected. They finally got a pill that worked but then I hit menopause and the migraines went away. No mood triggers just physically exhausting and demanding that I seek out a dark, cold quiet place. There’s a ton of literature that connects migraines and bipolar.

I used to get migraines a lot when I was younger but don't get them as often now. I get a lot of headaches but not migraines. I always end up vomiting with the migraines. I can't say they have an impact on my mood, but I've sure been getting mood swings with my menses here lately.

I had vicious migraines between the ages of 9 and 50-ish. I mean, crawling on the floor, lying on the floor in complete agony to a point at which I was disoriented. In my 50's I still have an occasional migraine, but not as severely. I have frequent headaches, though...at least 2 per week. At the first sign of pain, I take 3 Advil, which decreases the amount of pain and other migraine symptoms.
I connect BD to the migraines I have had. __________________ |

There is a definite association between the two.

I have just discovered a great deal of info online about the comorbidity of BD and migraines. A couple:

I had never really had migraines until a few years into the worst years of my bipolar disorder. I wouldn't say that they occurred during the worst of my bipolar episodes, but more the lighter portions of them. I wonder if they were a reaction to some forum of psych and brain trauma from my worst episodes. Sumatriptan injections did work like a charm for me.
I also experienced what are generally called "silent migraines". This is where one has all of the symptoms of migraines, but without the head pain. My migraines stopped as my brain healed and my carbamazepine (Tegretol) reached therapeutic levels. It's been a good four or so years since I had a migraine. |

I meant to mention that at one point I was prescribed Depakote for migraines. It was helpful while I was on it.
