There are already 10K deaths in Massachusetts, where I live. The healthcare system is overwhelmed. Please everyone be careful.

It's weird...when the World Trade Towers were hit 3,000 - plus people were killed. There was national outrage; Americans pulled together in agreement.
At this time over 13 million - plus people have died from covid, yet so many people are careless or downright hostile about having to take precautions, such as wearing a mask, social distancing, and not gathering. __________________ Last edited by *Beth*; Dec 02, 2020 at 10:59 PM.. |

Yes, I don't get it. We are in the midst of a national disaster. To magnify, as a species we are in a global disaster.

So incredibly true! And what gets to me is that it's not just some NYC New Yorkers, New Jerseyans, Philly Pennsylvanians, NYC Metro Area Connecticuters, foreign nationals, people from near D.C. (and a few others) affected, like it was on 9-11-01. You'd think some of the types of people who just don't care about covid-19 deaths wouldn't have cared that much about the Mid Atlantic states. Believe me, I've heard many in the US say bad things about New Yorkers, "People from the 'Garbage' State", "Philthadelphians". Yup, we hear that crap! But they don't care about their OWN state residents?!?!
My husband's best friend's brother-in-law doesn't care who dies from covid-19 because he thinks it's mostly [insert racist and classist words]. It's easy for most to demonize terrorists, isn't it? And sadly, so many that did, also demonized innocent good people from around the Middle East. But covid-19? There's no one in particular to demonize. Or rather, some chose to demonize the citizens, politicians, and doctors/scientists who said they had to wear a mask and social distance to protect people and curb the pandemic. "Those who say precautions are taking away their freedom?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!" They take away peoples' lives! I think that people who don't care enough about the covid-19 deaths are, themselves, a form of terrorist. And Chinese? They did a heck of a great job containing covid-19 in their country. It's a shame we didn't do even a fraction as good of a job as they did. They're not the ones to blame for all of the deaths in the US. Last edited by Soupe du jour; Dec 02, 2020 at 09:16 PM.. |

Yes, the difference between this and 9/11 is that there is no one to point the finger at, to demonize. It is heartbreaking.

It's outrageously absurd.

Watching from Australia I am saddened by the rising death toll in other countries such as the USA and UK. In Australia we locked down quickly and dramatically when Covid came. My state even shut itself off from the rest of the country until other states had no community transmission. In my state we haven’t had community transmission or deaths for at least six months. As we quarantine all international arrivals for two weeks we can now live almost the same as before Covid. Australia has had ‘only’ 800 deaths from Covid out of a population of 25 million. During lockdown it sucked but it was so worth it to be able to live relatively freely now. The only issue is we cannot leave or enter Australia unless we meet certain exemptions. So we are not free to travel. This doesn’t effect me. I’m happy here in my relatively safe bubble.
Other countries have achieved similar results. It only works when everyone is willing to sacrifice in the short-term for the goal to contain the virus. I understand people being unwilling to give up their freedoms, but the cost of that is huge for many others. Australia is also out of recession and doing well economically now. Many businesses are booming now the virus is under control. Jobs returning. I feel lucky to live where I do. It must be terrifying for those in the USA and UK. Sending hugs. __________________ Bipolar 1 with psychotic features PTSD "Phew! For a minute there I lost myself." 'Karma Police' by Radiohead |

The US's response to this is reprehensible.
