Default Can't stand myself

I hate the way I look. When I look in the mirror I see a monster. I know that's how I am.

In my experience it's the most important thing to remind yourself that what you see is quite unrelated to reality and that reality is quite unrelated to the concept of ugliness. It is precisely because you cannot see the reality of you that you think you're ugly. Of course you are beautiful. You would see that if you saw the real you.

I know exactly how you feel. My few friends and family just don't get it. It cripples and affects everything in my life

I know how you feel. I can not stand seeing myself in mirrors or in photos at all.

The thing is that neither of us is necessarily ugly. But we have the tendency not to see ourselves realistically. When we see ourselves in the mirror or on photos, we do not see what other people see, we see ourselves through the lens of our BDD. And this only further reinforces our negative image of ourselves. I realize that, and yet i still can not help but feel ugly when i see myself in the mirror. BDD is a way of thinking that can not be changed over night. But realizing how it effects our image of ourselves is a good start.

I see the same when I look in the mirror. You have to realize what you see is not real, it's your brain playing tricks on you. I've had BDD for over 25 yrs. and can relate to what you're going through.

WOW! 25 years?

Are you seeing a therapist? I only started seeing a therapist two months ago, and sometimes it feels hopeless. But 25 years must not have been easy .

Do you think seeing a therapist is hopeless? I kind of feel like this sometimes. I started mu therapy 3 months ago and I dont see any improvement in my BDD. I am crying while writing this.. I cant stand myself anymore. I feel like all my suffering is due to my appearence. If I had a 'normal' appearence I wont feel this way, therefore I would not be suffering from BDD. But I am the way I am and the things I am insecure about cannot be changed. I have to learn to live with my appearence and sometimes I think that is impossible. I feel trapped,I feel in a nightmare since my BDD got worse this year. I've never been this bad and it has been 5 months since there is not a single day where I don't feel depressed about how I Look.

I've been in therapy for years and have tried hundreds of medications! This illness is terrible and is tough to beat. It's very difficult to find a therapist that is equipped to treat BDD, but I keep on trying.

I can not for the world imagine how pills should help with this. Best thing would be to find out how the idea of beauty or normal looks entered the thoughts. And then abandon those ideas. Imagine also if blindness would help...
