Heart Re: Favorite old movies

Last night I enjoyed "Dream Wife", a romantic comedy starring Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr, and Walter Pidgeon. GREAT ACTORS of course. And I love the sexy, deep voices of Grant and Pidgeon. Grant's character sets out to find the perfect wife, LOL.

Cary Grant is equally great in comedy AND drama. Some actors are better at one or the other it seems. I mean I couldn't picture Humphrey Bogart in a comedy (though I think he made a few movies where he didn't play a gangster)! He's so good in those film noirs as a gangster or some shady character....Speaking of "Bogie", another fave is Key Largo when he starred with Lauren Bacall.

Anyway, Dream Wife was great fun. There was a fight scene in it that I found funny because it was done the way you see it in The Three Stooges. Slapstick I think you call it.

And the GOWNS and dresses were SO glamourous. Helen Rose designed them; I know she was one of the designers from that era.

There was also a scene in the elevator where a woman was on it, along with men. All of the men removed their hats. Grant had his hands full, but he struggled to remove his hat too then the woman got off, LOL.

I always thought this was a nice gesture, even if women didn't have any rights in that era hardly. I also thought it was done up to late 1800's or so, then that custom went away!

Thumbs up Re: Favorite old movies

I was blown away by James Cagney in White Heat, playing a psychotic gangster! Even Virginia Mayo got scared working with him cause he was so realistic in his acting.

(This is what the host introducing the movie said. He also said a lot of the ideas came from Cagney himself, like making his character have a mother fixation)

This is considered one of the classic gangster movies of all times.

TCM shows a classic movie each month in the theater. January was The Wizard Of Oz for the 80th anniversary. I saw it last Sunday. There were too many noisy kids to really enjoy it. But I was looking forward to seeing it in theaters since the 75th anniversary. So I guess it was ok. I think this month they are showing My Fair Lady. In March itís To Kill A Mockinbird, which I plan on seeing. I donít remember what else they are showing this year except The Godfather Part II, and Gone With The Wind.

I think a theater near me is going to show "My Fair Lady," and a friend has invited me to go. Sounds like fun.

I went to see a classic Christmas movie, the one with Jimmy Stewart, in a theater a couple of years ago. That was very enjoyable. It is nice to see old movies on the big screen.

I didn't get to "The Wizard of Oz." Too bad those kids were a distraction. Maybe the theaters will show it again at some point. I hope so.

"My Fair Lady" is also a favorite among the musicals. I have fond memories of sitting on my aunt's lap, sick with the flu, while we all watched this. It was Thanksgiving. I still remember her pointing out the Cinderella aspects to the story, knowing how a 9 year old girl would like that part. And I did! I also didn't find out till years later that Marnie Dixon did the singing, not Audrey Hepburn. And she wasn't credited...

Trav, do you mean It's a Wonderful Life, referring to a Jimmy Stewart Christmas movie? I loved that too.

I don't go to the movies now, not for over 10 years. Part of the reason is that adults, not just children, don't know how to behave in public. It ruins it for me. Not to mention all the texting and cell phone chatter, etc. going on now--everywhere, not just in the theaters.

I liked the Changeling, a more recent film but one with the feel of an older film.
