Has anyone here done DBT?
I’ve been told for years that I need it. I was diagnosed BPD years and years ago and things just aren’t getting better. I’m depressed, miserable, quick to react, struggle with constant suicidal ideation. I know DBT is really, really expensive. And I don’t know that I have time for it. And truthfully, I’m just not convinced it’ll help one bit. Any success stories out there? |

I have heard good things, but haven't had the chance to try it yet. I'm not sure how expensive DBT would be in Canada. I looked into it here, and there's a group that doesn't take insurance. It costs about $150 a week.
There are DBT resources online. Maybe you can download some of them and start doing the exercises on your own or with your therapist if you have one. |

I did DBT for free in Edmonton, there was a wait but it was still covered.
And yes, I did find it very helpful, I now only have BPD traits. There is a website DBT Self Help which I used while waiting. __________________ Mags Depression diagnosed March 1996 PTSD diagnosed January 2000 BPD diagnosed September 2013 |

I found a group that starts in January. It’s $560 for eight weeks but I’m not going to find anything for free here. When I was in hospital they told me I don’t qualify for any programs.

I was told there was a 2 year wait for public group DBT therapy and they take cases based on severity so you might wait longer.
I opted for private and its $200/week. Worth every penny and better than any therapy I've had before. If you have a chance to do it, do. There is also a book I think called Borderline Personality Disorder Tool Box. It has reading and activities. My therapist said its the exact same things they teach in group. |

I bought a book on DBT skills in June. It’s still under my bed.

I found it to be very helpful, but it's a lot of work if you want to get the most out of it, because you have to practice the skills between sessions.

I talked to my T this morning about doing this group. He is very supportive of it but thinks we should not meet while I'm doing it. That breaks my heart. I don't want to take a break from him so we'll see what happens. I'm going to talk to him about it more.

I found it marginally helpful. I am old -68 so i would say it works much better if you are young and just starting out. By the time it was available to me my life was pretty much done.

I think it's helpful, as do many people I know, but as with everything, your mileage may vary. There's an online course you can do that's completely free, if you want to give it a go without committing financially: DBT Peer Connections | Building Hope, Community and Skillful Means
