Hi,
Do you ever have a compulsion to spend money? Or you tell yourself you are going to the store for a few things and leave without what you intended to get? I currently live back on my own and have my own expenses and bills. However, I will go to the store even though I intended not to. The first month here, I went to Walmart of 25+ times. I spent a lot of money. Like between $50-$100 each time almost. I also have times where I won’t have any clue what I bought or have any awareness on the amount I am spending. I rarely shop online now, in the past it was worse. I have never gambled. I am having money but I would save more if I didn’t go to the store all the time. |

YES!! I spent so much money on EBay. Stuff I don't even want, anymore. So mad at myself for not leaving that money in the bank. A Paypal account can be deadly. I also felt the compulsion to buy, buy, buy! Today I am dead broke so I'm not worried about spending. I also learned my lesson because a lot of the stuff I bought..I never used & got rid of. So stupid. I have the impulsive thing, too. And the compulsiveness.

Yes, I buy stuff all the time that I don't need. I am not sure why I do this. I think it's part of my personality. I have like 10 subscription things through iTunes or Apple. I don't know if I'll ever stop buying stuff compulsively. Sometimes it worries me that I don't give much thought to what I buy.

I relate to this. Sometimes in the context of shopping, but also nightlife and gambling.
The purpose of the compulsion to spend may be different for you. My spending comes as a "side-effect" of chasing a good feeling. The different "flavors" of the high-chasing switches (for me) and it may be clubbing, wagering money and shopping. I did have a period of time I was seeking sex and took risks in that regard. To answer MsLady's question. I don't think impulsive shopping is a core trait of BPD, but impulsivity is a criterion of BPD listed in the DSM-V. __________________ Tic-Tac |

I never spend compulsively or in excess (of what we can afford). I don’t have major impulsivity (maybe minor sometimes). I am so confused as to what diagnosis I do or don’t have, and was diagnosed with Borderline traits by one doc, and EDD by another.

I do buy a lot of stuff I don’t need (mostly craft stuff, I think “I could do X and Y with that - I do have plans for most of it, but I’m having a hard time getting myself in gear to actually DO IT though). I hate it but I’m not actually as bad as I used to be.

Same here. In my case I am not only spend it by shopping, but eat out and having takeaway as well. I do get that nice feeling when I bought something, lasted around a week. Most of the times I ended up selling those stuff. I've tried many methods to stop, from budgeting to minimalism, no avail so far.

Having borderline traits simply means there are certain patterns that are in line with borderline personality disorder. It is also worth noting that personality disorders can take time to figure out in therapy because there are probably a whole lot of factors taken into account regarding what is going on and where it originated.. and so forth. I was diagnosed with bipolar II disorder for several years, perhaps prematurely, but even after turning 18, that diagnosis was what stuck.. and then I saw a new therapist who explained how BPD traits have some part to play in what has been going on for so very long. __________________ Tic-Tac |
