Default What Therapy has worked best for you, or has it at all

I am considering starting therapy again in the new year after 3 months of having stopped almost 2 years of psychotherapy.

I struggled with trust a lot and hardly opened up and when I did it was always in a matter of fact way. I share more with my friends then I do my therapist. There was a lot of shame, feeling of being misunderstood etc and never having the courage to talk about it openly to overcome these feelings.

Has a particular type of therapy worked for you? I am not sure where to start approaching therapists, even that feels too assertive of my needs they have always been assigned to be via a network.

What does recovering from CEN look like? I feel like I have tried to recover from this for 10 years and here I am 28 and still unable to make friends.

This can be where survivors search for mother and father figures. Transference issues in counseling can occur and this is normal for childhood abuse survivors.

Look into EMDR. It helps a lot of people with these types of issues.

I had “psychodynamic” therapy but it didn’t help as the therapist was very judgemental and shamed me

He took on the “abusive parent” role for a time I think he needed therapy himself

I’m not sure what sort of therapy is helpful (I’m also in the uk )

I hope you find a good therapist

I found that 2 years of INTENSE DBT group along with my private therapy was the best in the 20 years I had wasted on therapy. It gave me understanding & the words to be able to put with what I had gone through which opened the door to the research I did on understandibg the behaviors related to ASD Which I discovered both my dad & my soon-to -be x husband were both experiencing & I had no idea how do deal with that unknown white elephant in my life..

My group psychologist handled it like a college class which for me was perfect though she handled it in a way that all could relate. It brought me to where I am today with a lit if other things in tbe new life I made for myself after FINALLY leavong my H after 33 years of marriage.(other best thing I ever did)

DBT touches on so many aspects of life from emotions to interpersonal effectiveness to mindfulness to emotional regulation & teaches skills & the abiluty to reframe thoughts. Most of us learned skills that got us by when we were kids but aren't functional as adults. DBT is great for handlung this.

I am now in my mid 60's and have been in therapy much of my life only CEN has only recently been given a name and studied intensely by Dr. Jonice Webb. Her book Running on EMpty and numerous articles will have you thinking 'yes that's me' over and over. Her work is invaluable and helped me with the struggles only those with CEN know and helped uncover what I had strived to learn in all those years of therapy. The articles are posted on Psych Central. Best of luck delving into a once unnamed but large issue.
