You hear of childhood emotional neglect in the sense of being absent emotionally and not meeting basic emotional needs but what about overly critical parents and over bearing parenting style?

As a child I had a father who demanded certain standards of obedience (ex: don’t speak unless spoken to) and expected me to live up to a much unattainable level of behaviour. I was left always feeling like a failure and never good enough to please and obtain my fathers love and acceptance. Feeling like who I fundamentally was as a person was flawed and unworthy.

Is this considered trauma? What are some of the lasting effects of this parenting on an adult?

I completely relate to having extremely overbearing and overly critical parents. They also were emotionally absent.

I have not studied this topic in depth although I think it might be helpful..

Much respect to you

That sounds like emotional abuse to me.

I myself have experienced not being good enough for a parental unit. One thing it does, I think, is sap self-confidence. Do you fear people in authority, speaking up, offering suggestions, advocating for yourself, starting something new, meeting new people?
