It might be an attempt to maintain the integrity of the forum database - perhaps a larger number of post deletions may cause too much reindexing of the data or something?

Although you can't do anything about posts that already quote the posts you want erased, you could just edit them to be blank, or say *deleted*...

Because there are hundreds if not THOUSANDS of members here and if every single one of those members keeps asking to remove 5+ posts? Also consider the number of mods versus the number of members.

I've never requested that a post be deleted, so I didn't even know there was a limit. Once I started a thread that I realized had already been addressed...I just did what marvin_pa suggested. I deleted what I'd typed to make the post blank, then filled it in with "mistake, sorry".

If you're referring to posts you've made on a thread that is already running, you can edit your post. If the time is past for you to edit....hmm. I guess that all I can offer is that you carefully consider what you want to say before you type out the post.

I'm not exactly sure, but it seems to me that yes, it's 3 or 4 hours.

Hmmm, I've never asked for a post to be deleted. I've asked for threads to be closed. I did ask for all my albums, at one point, to be deleted.

I have no problem with the policy. There are too many users on here for admin/mods to be dealing with so many requests to delete posts. You can edit something within 4 hours of posting.

I have also requested, a few times, that threads be closed, just not deleted. seesaw, thanks for letting us know about the 4 hour edit period. I wasn't exactly sure about that time frame.

OK let's see.. but just know I don't care about the information that they sell to 3rd parties. In fact, I don't care about me. But I make a concrete bed to lay this to rest

A forum for mental health

A moderator that doesn't cut the mustard

A forum of people so distressed that they leave because they used up all 5 posts deletion. Shame.

Because people just want to be/feel safe.

They don't want to give us more because they are (and my final conclusion) sadists.

So. Will that be a one way ticket to ban land or a warning

If people are so distressed about putting things out there, they can deactivate their accounts, and start a new one to regain anonymity.

But frankly, when you come here you know the rules. And you know what you can and can't do or what can and can't be done. I don't see a mass exodus of people because they can't delete old posts.

It has nothing to do with sadists. There are a limited number of volunteers and I'd certainly rather they be dealing with the disputes and bullies and trolls that get on the forum rather than deleting hundreds of old posts. As we have mentioned, there are other ways to remove yourself from a post. Additionally, if you found you accidentally gave identifying information in a post, you could ask them to edit the post rather than delete it. Someone actually did this on my behalf once because I accidentally mentioned where I work.

All the moderators and admins I have encountered here have been completely professional. I don't always agree with their decisions, but they've been objective and professional about it.

I'm sorry that your experience here has not lived up to your expectation. It is what it is though. There are limitations and there are rules.

I've participated in several online forums for mental health issues and I've found this one to be the absolute best. Best people, best moderators, best resources for further reading.

If the allowable number of posts you can ask to have deleted is a big issue for you, perhaps this is not the right spot for you to land.

I have always found the mods here to be above reproach. They assist unselfishly.

Rules are in place to keep things ticking along.

I am not sure what singular attack you are referring to. I recall reading through that thread you mentioned. I don't spend much time on that subforum, but I recall that people felt like they wanted to keep all bipolar together because they didn't want to dilute the activity level.

If it's not about the post deletion then what is it? Your post asked what we think about the policy. You must have expected that at least some people would be fine with it, even if you are not. So far I haven't heard any argument from you on why this policy should be changed other than you don't like it. You say there's an exodus of members, but I don't see any evidence of that, specifically in regards to the post-deletion minimum. Members do often leave the community, but it's for a variety of reasons. Those of us that support the policy have expressed why.

To some extent people have to be responsible for what they put out there, even on an anonymous site. There are many ways to retract information besides a post deletion if you really need to.

1. People can modify their own post, up to 4 hours.
2. People can ask admin to modify their own post.
3. People can ask admin to delete up to 5 posts.
4. People can deactivate their accounts, which will remove their username associated with an account. Then they can start a new account with a new username if they need to cover tracks, so to speak.

I think if you could present a valid reason for changing the policy, you'd get more traction.

As for the other things, I can't speak to those. If what you posted about is not what the post is about, then I really don't know how to respond or provide support. I'd like to help.

I have no problem with the policy, I think if people need to have posts removed, they're able to edit them, I believe the mods have enough to do without running around deleting posts just because a member has said to them "can you delete these posts", if enough people message them wanting post deletions that takes their energies away from dealing with things like spammers, trolls, fighting, etc, they only have a limited amount of time to do stuff and they have real life stuff happening as well (for example families, work, etc) I'm hoping I'm making sense, my brain's turning everything to scrabble board upset all over the floor by the cat today

My understanding is the rule exists because some folks will post indiscriminately, then ask to have what they posted deleted or while upset a member will ask for massive deletion of their posts. Both are disruptive to the community. Plenty of others already said this, mods have limited time to do their volunteer work here without having to delete tons of posts. I have never seen any behavior to indicate any of them are sadists. Any time I have been approached about something I said/did in the forums it was done with courtesy and respect.

Like MuseumGhost I've been a member of several online communities. PC is the fairest, most smoothly run of the ones I participated in.

Yep the times I've been spoke with they've been nice to me here, so I don't understand the sadists comment either.

Some other forums I've been on the mods there are sadists, try to make member's lives more difficult and start with the yelling and threats at the drop of a hat , there's basically only two forums I feel welcome on and this is one of them

Just wondering now, is there a limit as to how many threads they get asked to close?

In terms of increasing board admin workload, I think that closing a thread is more or less a single button push on the admin's control panel - whereas, deleting individual posts is somewhat more time consuming.
