This is in no way a criticism of PC, but is about the reaction I have when I discover that threads have been deleted. I am wondering if I am the only one that feels a sense of loss or if it has something to do with my bipolar illness.

I think a big part of my reaction is that I am left to discover the deletion rather than being notified, whenever i might go looking for a post, or try to find one of my own, only to discover after some hunting that it must have been deleted.

Then I get this sinking feeling in my stomach. Sometimes I think irrationally that it has something to do with me. Maybe it does sometimes but maybe those times are rare or non-existent. If it were really bad I would get a notice from PC, so that is some comfort.

I don't really know why I get so wrapped up in thoughts about deleted threads.

one of the things that gets to me is when their's a popular thread (such as self care checkin, positive things i've done today,) something like that, it's really popular for like ages- then people stop posting to it and it gets buried in the pages

and in most cases, people don't go through the pages to try to revive it
also when a member of psychcentral who has created some really good threads gets deleted, and that person becomes a guest

not even a name. just a guest

it's like all that time of hard work and value to the comunity isn't even remembered

I was suspended years ago while "manic" I made some very improper posts ... by the end of two weeks my account was restored ... I felt very betrayed at the time ... the very reason I was here had been used against me ... if I could not be manic or depressed and share why be here ...

In my case ( I do not know anyone else's ) ... it was justified because I was out of control at the time ... my posts were hurtful and damaging ... and I am glad someone was watching out for the site ...

I post no judgement or opinion as I do not know or want to know the details ... I trust the administrators ... there's is a job of walking a tightrope ... and I say more power to them ... better them than me ...

in no way am I defending or judging your posts ... mearly say someone has to make a decision for the good of all .... and I am very glad it is not me ... are they perfect ... of course not ... but I am willing to abide by there decisions ...

I want this to be a home for all ... a warm loving place ... a place of safety ... to that end I wish you peace and love in your life .... Tigger ..

I have become so selfish in my old age,
that I don't mind.
If it's published, fine, if not, fine too.
I got it out of my system.
That's what really counts now.

Cheers.

I think it is normal to be at least a little attached to threads you author or post in. I imagine most people dislike their threads being deleted regardless of a bipolar diagnosis. I wouldn't say I get wrapped up in it, but there is a sinking feeling when something I wirte offends another or is criticised.

I do wish there was a deleted thread notification though. It would be nice if the moderators could leave a little note to educate you as to why they removed the post. That would help to avoid repeat offenses and give people who are manic or depressed something to consider when they are feeling balanced again.

When i start to get actually manic, I stop believing I have bipolar and, as a result, also stop posting here at PC. Why should I post into a forum I don't belong in?

But I see sometimes people repeatedly post into the bipolar forum at the same time claiming they are not bipolar after all...

Of course the diagnosis can change too, and I am sure that happens.

After being around for years here.... threads have vanished and there was no reason given, it’s annoying but what can you do ?

I think there is a big lack of Mods anymore. I’m sure it’s overwhelming.

I have gotten my hand slapped a few times for being to blunt. Do I think everyone needs to be supportive every single second and play into the possible OPs saga of needing validation when solid advice should be used. ( hand slap) ? No but I try like hell to give common sense advice which some people just can’t comprehend it , I avoid numerous posts for that reason.

It’s all about self care , right ?

I do think a mod should notify the OP if there thread is removed.

something else that annoys me sometimes is when a thread of mine gets moved from 1 forum to another and I don't know about it

I get paronoyed that I'm being watched

I can only remember 1 of my threads actually getting deleted, and though it would have meant a lot to me to have responses to it, I understand why it was deleted

(okay, I don't really fully understand), because it still came under the guidelines as far as I'm concerned

but usually I'm too weak/ afraid to argue about things like that

(moderators and administrators actually scare me.)

Still though, there is a impersonal touch to it all -- and while guidelines are guidelines, I still think there are better ways than being inactive members of a community who only intervene when they deem fit. Granted that being active in the community may seem to create bias... there is no real solution there either.

I haven't had the experience yet of having a thread deleted or moved that I know of, but part of being here is working with and through each other. You can't edit and filter what you don't like out in real life... I think we are risking real, healthy communication for " safe place" sometimes..

Anyway, just my take.

As a former moderator for a nursing forum, I know from experience that it's a delicate balancing act. Something that may be noncompliant with the Terms of Service may be deleted one day, while a similar thread is left up the next. Some mods are bothered by certain types of posts, like when a member starts out with an attitude, while others may look at them as a challenge. Like everybody else, we're all different, and sometimes we make mistakes. Over-moderation is just as bad as allowing members to be rude and offensive to others. I think PC is moderated fairly for the most part, but it could always be improved. JMHO.

I want to emphasize again that I am only writing about my own emotional reactions to threads being deleted without knowing why or . being informed, not about the decisions by the mods and admins to do that, which is something we all accept as a condition to participate here.

I have been/am on several different forums as I imagine many others are as well. It also happens sometimes on these other forums that threads or individual posts might be deleted but I find it bothers me less as I am usually reasonably clear in my own mind about why that might have happened, like for example soliciting donations, whereas oftentimes I am left wondering if I participated in a deleted thread here, how and if I contributed to it being deleted.

I am also sometimes very cautious about responding to certain threads to avoid being drawn into certain types of conflict or disagreement.

After a thread i have been participating in is removed I become more cautious about my posts and edit out a lot of what i might otherwise say because of my emotional reaction.

Not sure why this thread was moved here. I am not seeking to provide feedback but to connect with the people in the bipolar forum who know me from years of posting.

I did realize one connection today. I used to post a lot on a quit smoking forum but the whole forum vanished from the web from one day to another. It was on a commercial quit smoking web site and I guess they were using the forum to drive traffic to the website but eventually the owners lost interest in supporting it. It was a big loss at the time to not only have all the threads I wrote and participated in vanish but the whole forum disappear.

Typically what I see is that threads are deleted when they address inappropriate topics. For example threads that started as an attack on particular posters or intolerant threads that bash or promote bashing of other cultures or races or religions etc I don’t see other threads deleted.

If threads are too argumentative then they just get closed, not deleted.

I don’t miss deleted threads as those are typically inappropriate to begin with and have no place on PC. That has been my experience

The only times I’ve had this is when I was s-e-v-e-r-l-y manic / psychotic a few years back and just everything was 150% inappropriate on here (but genuinely, I had no idea ... at the time)

*sigh*

As a side note I take my meds regularly. True.

Hey Crazy Hitch,

That hasn't happened to me on here because when I've been severely manic I've also been convinced I didn't have bipolar so wouldn't be posting on a forum for people with bipolar...

but I do think the issue of deleted threads is more of an issue in the bipolar forum for reasons related to the illness itself.

I also take an AP regularly since finding out about Rexulti on the bipolar forum.

I'm glad that this thread has remained respectful and thoughtful to this point. I just want to throw in that...
if a post is removed the member who started the thread is notified
if a thread is moved to another, more appropriate, forum a redirect will stay on the old forum for 5 days. Hoping that the 5 days is long enough for someone to see the post has been moved. Leaving them longer than that would just make the forums messy.
if someone posted against guidelines they are notified so you never have to worry that a thread was removed "because of something you did" but weren't told. This shouldn't happen.
Everyone who has posted in a removed thread can not be notified. We just don't have the manpower to notify that many people.

The system isn't perfect but we do what we can.

Thank TheWell for your comments. I rationally understand that these deletions have nothing to do with me. It's an emotional reaction I have been writing about since the beginning of the thread. Now I have a little more insight into my reactions.

My parents used to argue and fight in a foreign language they didnt teach to their children so I was as a child often in an emotional 'war zone' of fighting and having no idea what the fighting was about and thinking it was about me. It turns out my father was having affairs all those years, but I didn't know what was going on at the time. I think I am reacting to 'parental authority' of the site acting in a hidden way to me based on my childhood experience.

Again it was not my intent to provide feedback as I originally posted this in the bipolar forum to get support and help rather than to make any suggestions about the site.
