I have a question about closing a thread:

I just read, in another thread, that it had been closed because the original member has left psychcentral

this got me to thinking:

when a user leaves psychcentral, does the thread always get closed? (even if their are a lot of members who are currently discussing the topic)

also what about comunity threads

what are the rules about closing threads when the original member isn't here

my own views on this.....

sometimes members have to leave because of domestic violence reasons. if their posts keep coming up it could lead to a very dangerous situation for them if their abuser has found them here and others keep posting in their threads.

sometimes members leave the site and come back as someone else for a fresh start. if members are constantly bringing up the old post that the member has hoped to leave behind because they are no longer diagnosed that or just because they wanted a fresh start, they cant get their fresh start with members constantly reminding them of old posts..

there is also no good bye threads because it can cause other members here problems or the person saying goodbye may be doing it for attention (not saying this perticular situation this is whats going on just that this has happened in the past with good bye threads where people post good bye then members post how much they miss them and dont want them to go then the person posts sorry they had no intentions on leaving.

my views are if there are no good bye threads for this reason then I shouldnt be posting in old threads the same that is against the rules for good bye threads.

my point I as a member can think of many reasons why when members leave for what ever reasons their user name turns into anon with a number and their past posts get locked. the main one being we make friends here and its like pouring salt in a wound to be constantly reminded that our friends have left. kind of like going through the grieving process at some point its time to move on instead of staying stuck causing ourselves needless pain.

in my heart I wish all that have left well but I wouldnt want my constantly bringing up their posts and threads to harm others or their abilities to come back with a fresh start. So I refuse to post in any good bye or anon marked threads.

mind you this is not a rule thing I am talking about, because I dont know the exact reasons why those who have left over the years have their user names changed to anon with a number and their past threads locked. this is just my own musings/ thoughts and what I go by.

There is no rule about closing threads. I closed the thread because the original poster was now Anonymous and people were still posting to the thread responding to that person. That didn't make a lot of sense to me so it's closed.
Feel free to PM me if you have further questions about this.

okay, but what if someone started a thread that turned out to be a really hot discussion topic and that person then left

would you still close it knowing lots of people are still talking about it? (as they are also not exactly replying to the original poster, just sharing their views)

This is a great question RV. I don't understand The Well's comment:
"There is no rule about closing threads. I closed the thread because the original poster was now Anonymous and people were still posting to the thread responding to that person. That didn't make a lot of sense to me so it's closed."

I don't see anything senseless about it. If current members like the thread and keep it active, why end that? Aside from the enjoyment it could be bringing to current members, the former member could still be reading the posts and feeling comforted by them.

I enjoy a gratitude thread that was started by "Anonymous." Several other current members enjoy it. Is that thread at risk of being closed at some point because it appears senseless to respond to a thread from a former member?

I think it was closed because the member didn’t want to be identified.. not sure.

I don’t think they automatically get closed...

Yes.. all gratitude threads are enjoyable

I think I remember the thread ...

Maybe the point is that gratitude type threads (of which there are many) are more community threads, which many members enjoy and all are welcome to post in and if it’s a personal support thread that people are still posting to when the member has left it might be closed..

Just my take .. I could be wrong.

Thanks TheWell hugs

I agree with what you said re if people constantly bump up old posts of members who have left it might harm their ability to return with a fresh start. I hadn’t thought of that before.

I love the diversity of people here and their views..

And that there isn’t one “right answer” usually or a “one size fits all”

I too miss many who have left and who have contributed so much to this wonderful community. Maybe some will return at some point. (I know some have returned ..)
