The community support team is here to help enforce the community guidelines. We do this primarily through post reports. That is the primary method on which we take action. We get over 1,000+ posts per day here, so it's unrealistic to expect some other level of interaction (e.g., just expecting mods to come across problematic posts or threads on their own).

All potential problems/actions/threads needing attention are discussed by the whole team before any action is taken. This is done to ensure no one mod is acting on their own or according to their own unique interpretation of the guidelines, and to allow the entire team weigh in on the seriousness of the potential problem -- or even if it is a problem.

This also means that because we do this, action takes time to filter through the process. We may close a potentially-problematic thread before taking further action in order to limit the amount of any additional harm it may cause. Keep in mind that what may be patently obvious to one member (due to their own experiences, background, history, and information) may not be patently obvious to others. Some stuff may seem really simple or easy, but even so, we generally need to discuss it to ensure it is indeed violating a guideline (and not just in poor taste, or a viewpoint that isn't popular).

Action is taken via PM to the OP or poster, and, if needed, a thread or post is removed. In some cases where the thread may have value to the OP, we may leave the thread in public view, but keep it closed to further comments. If no action is warranted, no further action is taken (the thread or post remains).

In reference to the specific question posted by the OP here, we do not pass judgment or try to make clinical judgments about others here. This is a peer-led, self-help support forum. Oversight is in relationship to the community guidelines, not any kind of therapeutic intervention. That's never been our purpose or a part of the mission of the support groups, and simply isn't possible given our extremely limited resources. And of course, the fact that everyone who helps out in the community is a volunteer.

The community support team's only role here is to support helping members to follow and adhere to the community guidelines. Nothing more.

If a member feels a post needs attention or review, the best course of action is to click on the report icon and tell us what you think is problematic or of concern to you with the thread or post. Someone on the team will take a look at it and we will discuss it, and take action on the post if it violated a community guideline. If it doesn't clearly violate a community guideline, then no action will be taken.

Hope this clarifies. This has been pretty much the way we've worked for the past decade here, and it's worked out pretty well for the community.

There are others that have spouted off some pretty extreme and hurtful thinking. Why are such things tolerated; yet those pointing out the inappropriate nature of the threads and forum behaviours are the ones chastised and shut down?

I realise one needs to tread carefully in such matters. I repeat, however, that validating pats on the back are not the answer. We absolutely should never then encourage the individual other than to urge them to get help. I don't think it a great effort for a thread to be closed - with full explanation of course - and the OP reached out to.

What is an incel?

Dictionary definition: Involuntarily celibate, or "can't get laid." But that's something of a misnomer. They very well could get laid if they would learn to recognize and address their own failings instead of blaming others, but that's a discussion for another time.

Wishful Thinker, please don’t go anywhere. I like you and I like that you bring up issues of concern and relevance about what goes on here. I see no harm in that at all. I think it’s healthy.

I’ve wondered from time to time myself about what’s happened to posters who are obviously out there in cloud coockoo land. Although I’ve never asked, I’ve certainly wondered, how in heck is THIS handled???

I guess the way those posts are handled is to just ignore them with the idea that we don’t even know if they’re real or made up, but still.....

I don't find language that calls other members "out there in cloud coockoo land" all that helpful to a conversation like this.

Being different isn't a reason to be censored here, and there's nowhere in our community guidelines that say you can't post things from your perspective that may be very, very different than most people's perspective (e.g., someone with schizophrenia or psychosis).

This is, after all, a mental health support forum. We specifically cater to people out there in "coockoo land."
