Default Request for Bipolar Treatments Sub Forum

The Bipolar forum receives a lot of posts regarding the different treatment options available to patients. These threads are incredibly helpful for learning what to expect when taking a new med, withdrawing from a med, dealing with side effects, etc. However, these threads are comingled with everything else and usually end up lost within the many pages of threads created every year.

I created a thread in the Bipolar forum discussing the possibility of creating a centralized location to discuss treatmemts. The idea of creating a new sub forum within the Bipolar forum was raised. We recognize the existence of the Medications forum here at PC, but hope to create something specific to the Bipolar forum as users historically navigate there to discuss treatment concerns specific to bipolar disorder. Also, we would like to discuss all treatment options as opposed to medication only.

The purpose of the Bipolar Treatments sub forum would be to discuss treatment options, success stories, symptoms, withdrawal, life without meds, alternative treatment options, med resistant treatment options, and other topics related to treatment. We feel creating a sub forum will provide an easy way for users to scan titles so that they can find threads of interest and avoid potential triggers.

Thank you in advance for your consideration in this matter. A link to the thread where this idea was discussed by members of the Bipolar forum is provided below. I am happy to provide additional information as needed.

fern46, as a regular member of the bipolar forum, I love this idea! I used to be a regular member on other online bipolar support forums (and even a moderator for one) and they had exactly what you are proposing. They had the advantages that you referenced, and were frequently visited. I, myself, would surely visit and post in a potential Bipolar Treatments sub-forum in the bipolar forum (here at PC) more than the general one that currently exists. I tend to "dwell" only in the bipolar forum at Psych Central, and imagine others do similarly.

I like the idea of keeping all the bipolar stuff in one place -- a centralized hub.

While the Psychiatric Medications forum can be useful for many things, many members with bipolar disorder tend to make their own medication/treatment threads in the bipolar forum because they are seeking answers from people with bipolar, and they know that they are more likely to get an answer from someone with bipolar in the bipolar forum than they are from bipolar people in the Psychiatric Medications forum. I'm not saying that the Psychiatric Medications forum isn't useful, but I think a "Bipolar Treatments" subforum would help keep the bipolar forum organized ssince I can imagine people will continue to make medication related threads in the bipolar forum regardless. I know I haven't been around for a terribly long time, but in my 3+ years here, I have seen medication threads in the bipolar forum on a near daily basis. Thus, I don't think these threads will stop being made in the bipolar forum. So I think we might as well just create a place for them, especially since people will be able to search for things easier.

Just my 2 cents.

Edit: Plus, people can talk about ECT, TMS, etc. in the Bipolar Treatments forum.

Heart Re: Request for Bipolar Treatments Sub Forum

I strongly support this proposal. Too many times, members start threads with med inquiries made to other members of the Bipolar form, only to find their inquiry moved into the Medications forum, where activity on the thread is, at best, minimal. Keeping the inquiries within the Bipolar forum would maximize both information and support.

I've been a member of NeuroTalk, the sister site to PC, for more than 15 years. We'd had a subforum like the one being proposed here in the "Neuropathy" forum* there. This was incredibly successful and became one of the very best places to look up treatments and treatment -related information on the net. That treatment subforum was extremely popular on an international level. I believe we can have a very successful treatments subforum here in the Bipolar forum, as well.

I am grateful to fern46 and to everyone contributing to and supporting this proposal.

*I would like to acknowledge the wonderful moderator who organized the very successful NeoroTalk's Neuropathy forum and subforums. She is an amazing team leader and the #1 contributor to the forum efforts, the most determined and extremely compassionate MrsD.

Sorry, I did mean to post about it here. The sub-forum is live and available now:

https://psychcentralforums.com/bipolar-treatments/

We're going to see how this works out, sort of as a test subject. If it seems like it is well-used and enjoyed by the membership, we'll be happy to do it with other high-traffic condition forums as well.

Is there any way that the posts on the sub-forum could no go away after however much time passes? If we're trying to build a database on these meds for people who are new to them the information being posted from the beginning would be most helpful to at least some of them. And if the posts we make now disappear because we don't need an ongoing discussion of every med (ie I posted about loxapine which someone may find helpful but quite possibly not before the post times out) we are going to be writing the same things over and over.

I'm not sure I'm making sense here; I just think these early posts are valuable and would hate to see them disappear and all new posts started for the same meds.

I agree with BeyondTheRainbow's sentiments. I would like to keep the threads visible without them disappearing from view after 100 days. I mean, I know people can search for the threads via the search bar if they "disappear," but I think members would have an easier time browsing the threads/forum if everything was kept in view. Plus, I think we'd have repeat threads because people would assume they don't exist if they don't see them.

So, is there a way to change the settings for that particular subforum such that threads which have been inactive for 100+ days are not "timed out," or so to speak?

I know people can edit their personal user settings such that threads older than 100 days are "browsable," but I don't think most people would adjust their personal user settings because they don't know about it or don't know how to.
