It shouldn’t call contacts? Because friend is a word with capital letters.
Friend is something deeper.
I don’t feel comfortable with it.
I would better want to receive a contact request than a friend’s one.
Maybe I’m doing a great deal of this but I feel bad to reject a friendship request and I sometimes feel forced to accept it.

Hi Azul,

Yes, it's an interesting question. It's a question I see quite regularly on the internet, too. A lot of people have questioned the idea of internet 'friending' including myself, and if you're interested, the concept even has it's own Wikipedia page(!) Friending and following - Wikipedia

As a 51 year old, the concept of friendship, to me, is quite clear-cut, the same for you by the looks of things. But take me back to my twenties, and there we see my concept was quite different to how it is now. It's just my belief but I think the concept of friending on social media is more of a 'willy-nilly' adolescent way of what a friend is meant to be. Probably since a lot of social media websites were created by young people at the time.

I like the term 'contacts' better as well. And it should be up to the two parties involved as to whether or not they can consider each other proper 'friends'.

Good explanation. I didn’t think on that possibility. It has lots of sense. Thanks.

It's phrased that way to encourage social interaction online. A lot of people want connection, not just random contact. I understand your perspective on it, but it's just a marketing tactic to appeal to a specific common need among most people.

I think I'm agreeing with this, currently. It is a bit too easy sometimes to ''unfriend'' someone... un- ''friending'' someone who is just a ''contact''... no big thing

I have also been told in the past I was ''rude'' for leaving a ''friend request'' ''hanging'' (this was not my intention....

I think it's up to the two parties involved whether or not they consider each other proper friends (or ''friends'')
