Can anyone relate and share how they overcame/ are overcoming their ptsd? My boyfriend was a victim of a shooting that scarred him with ptsd. He began to have problems sleeping, eating, quit a great job, almost quit school, and distanced himself in our relationship because of how badly he was mentally effected from being shot. Later he was locked up (still in jail). I joined this support group on behalf of him to receive as much advice as I could to help him get through this. He is receiving medical treatment in jail for his ptsd, but I feel like jail is making it worst. I feel like there should be other mental help available to inmates dealing with ptsd. I'm pretty sure they all deal with ptsd trying to survive in the jail system. I am looking forward to getting any advice out there. Thanks

Hi, EFoster, and welcome to PsychCentral. It's incredible that your boyfriend is receiving treatment for his PTSD in jail - that is wonderful. Being in jail is no doubt not helpful for him, but hopefully with the treatment he's receiving, it will enable him to bear it. I really can't think of a thing to add beyond what the wonderful Skeezyks has posted. From my own story, I can say that PTSD-specific treatment is an absolute must. I've been through many different types of therapies over the years, which helped with this or that, but it wasn't until I was diagnosed with, and started treatment for, the PTSD specifically that the issues caused by it started to be addressed.
