I went twice to see a counselor. After spending months looking for someone who takes my insurance. I haven’t felt comfortable with her. It feels like she’s just rushing me and she ended the second session a few minutes early. I don’t feel like she’s really listening to me. She cancelled last week’s session and then she cancelled this week’s session.

I don’t want to go back. I know I need support. I need to talk through my issues. Or do something. I need to work on things. But this is typically my experience with counselors. I just don’t find that they are very helpful. I have ordered some books on boundaries. Those seem more helpful than a counselor.

Anybody else find counseling to be frustrating like this? Any suggestions? I thought about looking for a local support group but I’m not sure that would be a good idea either.

I’ve generally had pretty good luck with therapists but cancelling two appointments in a row would be a huge red flag for me and I’d keep looking for someone more reliable who takes your needs seriously.

My Primary told me that if you aren't comfortable with a counselor to seek out a new one. I do understand the Insurance issue, as that's where I am at, currently.

His words of advice were "It's like a new relationship".
Like if you don't find yourself comfortable, compatible, if it isn't a healthy give-take relationship, then they aren't for you.

My advice; ask if she knows of any others who accept your insurance. Voice your concerns about feeling rushed, or that she isn't listening or constructively helping you with your problems. (I'm not good with confrontation, as I'd probably do this via Email if possible).

I hope things work out for you.

I'm so sorry you're hurting so much, Sisabel I understand your pain. I have tried several therapists as well. It can take time. I completely agree with what piggy momma has already wisely said better than I ever could. It seems like this isn't the right fit for you. Please keep looking for one if you can. I feel like it may really help you. I'm glad those self-help books are helping you out a bit! Keep reading them if you can. Do you want to share why are you not sure about a local support group? If you want to, of course. Have you had bad experiences in the past? Either way, I'd suggest to try it as well if you prefer it. Perhaps you'll have better luck there! Keep trying. Keep looking. I hope you'll be able to find the right fit for you. Remember that different methods work for different people. Perhaps there are other types of therapy that you could look into. Perhaps you could look for other completely different methods. There's nothing to be ashamed of. Whathever may work for you and it may help you to feel better. You're a wonderful person, Sisabel. I hope you'll be able to get the help you need and deserve. You deserve to get better and to feel good. You deserve to live a good life just like everyone else. Please don't give up. Try to hang on. Be kind to yourself, Sisabel. Remember that we're here for you if you need it. Feel free to PM me anytime. Let me know if I can do something to help you. Wish you good luck! Let us know how it goes. I'm so sorry you have to deal with all of this, Sisabel. You don't deserve to suffer at all

I would not deal with her one minute longer, not even to find out if she can recommend someone. Call your insurance company or go online and get a list together and try again.

It is a good idea to interview more than one therapist...by phone; you can discuss your issues and find someone who is a good fit.

I definitely wouldn’t go back to this counsellor. I too have often found books more helpful than counsellors. I hear there are good therapists/counsellors though.

I cancelled my appointments with the counselor. I just don’t want to pay money and feel an uncomfortable feeling from someone. And her cancellations were interrupting my therapy. I’m really trying to get better and to do better. I think if I found a good counselor that would help me a lot but I’m so apprehensive to even bother trying again.
