I found this Psych Central article really useful. My partner and I had a nice chat about it and how it relates to our own feelings.

Hope it helps others

I like a lot of this but I sort of disagree with some of it. I disagree that we are responsible for how we feel. IMO: we aren't responsible for HOW we feel but how we REACT to how we feel. We feel what we feel. The article is right that our context will dictate how we feel about something, but we cannot control how we feel about something; therefore, we are not responsible for how we feel, but rather, we can control how we respond to our feelings, and therefore to our response/reaction.

Example: I cannot change that I am offended by something you said, but I can control how I respond to you about it.

Otherwise I think it's spot on. I feel it's very detrimental to tell people they can control how they feel. In my opinion that's telling them to negate how they feel and not deal with their actual feelings but to ignore them or superimpose some other artificial feeling on top of it. That's just my take.

I realized that I may be nitpicking on the words here a bit. I think it's possibly saying what I'm saying without making the detailed delineation.

Thanks for the link. I had not seen this article before. And I'll hope to have a chance to link members to it when the opportunity arises.
