How do you guys keep going and keep from feeling hopeless with how society is going? Over the past couple years I've paid less attention to current events just for the sake of self care but it gets hard to ignore sometimes the sense that everything is going to ****?

I'm not from the U.S. but I think many places are undergoing challenging times of change.

For myself I try to limit my exposure to news (we get a daily paper which is a more concise less opinion based source of news), social media.

Can you help involve yourself in an area which redresses the negative changes? Like volunteer or donate to food banks? Many people find positive action however small helps them feel better like they can do something to help.

I try not to talk politics on here, as it is kind of a recipe for conflict and hurt feelings.

That said, I am, in fact, extremely upset by the current situation in the US. What I have to do is really limit my exposure to it. I watch little of the impeachment trial and very little coverage of it. Basically, any article about the president, I pretty much avoid, because I know it is going to make me very angry. Guaranteed.

I believe that my approach is very immature and lame, that I should put my feelings into action, as suggested above, but I can barely stay out of the hospital as it is, so this is the best I can do at the moment.

Take care of yourself first. That is my best advice.

I dont think its immature. As you say, you need to take care of yourself first. My therapist agrees with me in this respect. The other issue is I already live in a very liberal state so I feel any action I take is just going to result in more of the same.

I agree this should be moved to a politics section. Some people might like the age of trump. Just saying.

But I have gotten rid of cable. I only watch you tube and hulu.

I go to news websites to get the news and though headlines and bother me, not reading the whole thing is helpful.

I worry about the possible cuts to Medicare and social security that they are talking about. I have a job but I only work 2-3 days a week 5 hour days and I struggle greatly even with that. My Medicare is very important. I was just texting my mom about how much non Medicare insurance is. If he cuts it then I’ll have to find a second job while I can barely hang on to my first one, and then buy insurance that can cost up to $1000 a month. My mom says not to worry though

I am 67yo and this is the first time I have felt really afraid for our country and the world. As an activist in the 60's-70's & a liberal, I never felt then, as I do now, that the people in power actually wanted to end representative democracy... I just believed we disagreed, even with riots, we seemed to be moving jaggedly in the right direction, when I read books set between WWI and WWII I see here and now but now is more dangerous given the insidious way technology can be used and not seen....politics should be general social chat but it truly has become an Emotional issue as we are being "led" by the emotions of a leader, not the policy/politics of a leader.

Politics are all about the emotions and Trump preys on them well. Just pay attention to the facts and do not take the emotional hooks.

I read dark money and believe totally that the 1% is useing their vast resources to thwart democracy. Since the orange one bought his position I really limit tv and Internet info. Know matter which side it is its emotional decisive take no prisoners verbiage. I vent on here occasionally to get it off my chest and out of my system. Kind of like a steam vent, to reduce pressure.
