It's amazing isn't it? I've been doing it for a year and it's working better than ever. In the first few posts after the start, I have some hints about getting going in the early stages, in case you haven't seen that already.

It's a very sound concept and technique. Being aware you have choices in the first place is very important. Being aware of how you make choices and which choices you make is very powerful. Becoming aware of things you are not normally aware of gives you power. Why not try it.

I think there are other methods of achieving the same thing.

I may not agree in the underlying theory as being a core cause. Maybe it is for some people. It is a good treatment approach I think though. Maybe if you have sub conscience negative beliefs about yourself due to childhood issues that effect decision making than you want to be aware of and challenge those beliefs.

I gave you some props vital after our butting heads for awhile now. The above is how i really feel.

Speaking of your signature line, I once gave a seminar that Richard Feynman attended. He was the first one in the seminar room too, so I had to make chit-chat with GOD ALMIGHTY before the talk. It was too surreal to really enjoy in the moment, but I'll never forget that booming Brooklyn accent. The subject didn't come up, but he was known for thinking that Psychiatrists are witch doctors. He was a bit like you in a way. He didn't believe anything (dentistry, for instance!) unless he understood it himself directly from the data.

Besides his brilliance I think I like him most because of his sense of humor and his ability to explain things in a way you can kind of get it plus be laughing the whole time. And his playboy bachelor reputation.

Leaving aside my case of depression.

I think awareness is the first and most powerful tool in life. If your technique brings about awareness of things covered up then it is very powerful.

I think other tools and techniques have to be applied after awareness such as some analysis, rationally challenging belief and value systems that do not serve you well, identifying learned behaviors and defense mechanisms that served you as a child but no longer serve you well at all, and making a concerted effort to change those behaviors. This of course involves decision making.

I am reading a good book by Steven Pinker, a psychologist and linguist at Harvard, called "How the Mind Works." I am not far into it but he is very much going to get into the processes of decision making and the forces behind behavior. I have watched his lectures and I think he is brilliant. "The Stuff of Thought" is probably his most famous book.

I must say, I read through this thread and this strategy to defeat depression seems very promising. I started last night, when Vital shared with me this method, and it seems to be working thus far. I hope it'll beat back the oppressive negativity and finally free me from the shackles of depression once and for all.

I also sometimes feel a little giddy when I use it. Sometimes the relief is so great when I realize that it really is working and I realize that I don't have to suffer anymore.

Hi everybody,

If you're just starting SNAP CLUB don't worry about changing your thoughts or feelings right away, just concentrate on tiny tiny decisions like...

SNAP I'm going to put on my shoes
SNAP I'm going to put the left shoe on first
SNAP I'm going to look at that tree for 5 seconds
SNAP I'm going to go pee
SNAP I'm going to have a cup of tea
SNAP I'm going to lift my leg
SNAP I'm going to take a walk
SNAP I'm going to take the stairs
SNAP I'm going to go up the stairs left foot first

When you go shopping there's lots of fun decisions to make. Enjoy it, play with it, experiment with it, make it your own. FEEL the moment when you snap. NOTICE that you are enjoying it (a natural smile will appear ). In a way, you are feeling the true you, in the present moment. This is your refuge in the storm and the source of your true inner power.

Happy New Year....

I really really like the snap thing! More snapping in 2015!

We need to help ourselves change - many professionals and groups are very good but it is up to us to figure out how to change for the better on a daily basis.

I wanted to add this - regarding worry/anxiety.. I had a therapist give me a little trick to trick my brain . If you are worrying worrying - whatever it is - especially if there is little you can do to fix whatever the worry is at the moment - give yourself a time limit say 10 minutes. You get to worry about it for 10 minutes that day. Then you get to worry about 10 minutes tomorrow and so on. When that worry keeps creeping back - you tell yourself that you already worried about it today - tell yourself to stop - you can worry about it tomorrow. You can work some "snaps" into this.

This does take some time - but it works for me. It helps me at night if I wake up from worry.

In many cases you will resolve what ever worries you when you are not even thinking about it... solutions come many times out of the blue and that's a good time to snap as well.

I really thought oxcarbazepine was working.... but I guess it takes time... I just want to keep crying... why men love to break our hearts? why aren't they straight forward and say "I'm sorry I'm not interested in you in that way" but instead they shun away and hide and say nothing.

This program reminds me when I decided to write my notes with left left hand. Then I would start to brush my teeth with my left hand. then I started to do other things consciously. I began to notice little conscious choices and I had the power to will.

Something that helps me:
Imagine if you had to live this day over an innumerable amount of times, over and over. Now. How would you live it?

We are like pieces of art and each new day is another brush stroke. Is your painting going to be uplifting and elevating when it comes to it's finality? Be gallant. Paint your work of art consciously. You can't do it all in one day, so do it little by little, a day at a time.

To be Beautiful is to be True, and to be those are to be Good.

Hello,
I wanted to let you know that I am using your SNAP technique for a week or so. It seems I am more motivated thanks to it but, motivation was never really my biggest problem.
I'm not even sure what my problem is. I sometimes feel normal then I suddenly get depressed and plan to end my life. Now I'm feeling bad again.
I have a problem with my life that I think snapping is not going to solve. I mean, sure, it helps to feel better but it is only getting my mind of the problem that I need to solve. I can snap and tell myself to focus on a particular thing, sometimes it works, I think with more practice it will mork much more often, but it isn't going to fix my life at all.

Still thank you for sharing the technique and your story. I'll continue doing it as it does help with some things.

Thanks for letting us know how it's going. I think what you say is actually a good sign. When I started, I felt something right away, but it took several months for my depression to really dissolve. In the early stages, bad thoughts and feelings are still really strong and snapping won't get you out of them. Be patient. It helps to concentrate on the snaps and FEEL them and enjoy them as actively as you can. You may find a natural little smile appear when you do it .

Be sure to check for possible medical/nutritional issues if you can (see post #74). I also do exercise, yoga and take supplements. People also have success with meditation. I remember your first post came in the winter in Poland and that made me thing that it might be light sensitivity (which can be quite strong). You might want to try to get vitamin D supplements (which are pretty cheap, at least in the US) and even sit in front of some bright lights and see if that makes you feel better. Keep trying new things. Spring is coming.

Hey everyone!

I'm now reducing meds (Abilify, from 7.5mg to 5mg - I was really depressed when I started on that amount and had been worrying how it would go) and have been worrying about some other things/decisions too, then told myself I have one week 'off' worrying and then I will decide. This kinda helped me.

Also, started taking Calcium&D3 and B vitamins - brewer's yeast and some Magnesium (small amount, too much has side effects ) and I feel much better!

Haven't done much snapping, kinda forgot about it inbetween, this thread reminds me how fun it's been! (I don't snap in public, just when I'm alone, or in my sleeve so it's not seen)
snap - raise my arm - exercise!
snap - again! haha

I have done DIY CBT journalling and EFT, and some TAT in the past too... These are all techniques that can help... Snapping is one of the techniques that is free and easy to do, so why not try it?
