I will respond to 2019 in ways which optimize my personal stability. I will be patient, gentle, and loving with myself. When I feel anxious or unstable I will go to my personal checklist of things which bring me peace and comfort. My anxious or depressed times are a nudge from the Universe to seek out more peace and quiet in order to get back to inner harmony. My downs remind me of how glorious and precious my ups are! Without downs, there can be no ups. With joy, so too comes sorrow. These are natural contrasts of the human condition. I am intrinsically valuable and powerful no matter what...throughout all of my ups and downs. 2019 will be more balanced for me than 2018 because every year I grow stronger and wiser and I have decided it will be so."
Wow! What a powerful flip. Thank you!!!

I can't fully explain it but this piece of music helps me to feel powerful and hopeful...there is something majestic about it.

YouTube

I like to imagine the instruments saying to me: "You got this Hope! You are on the right track. Keep going!"

I am a bit weird...no doubt Hahahaha

Your advice on flipping for weight loss and stability was so on point that I’ve written it down and am going to carry it around with me. Much appreciation.

I love this! Thanks for sharing! It brought back fond memories as I used to play flute, violin and French horn. It’s a powerful piece of music.

You're a musician Jennifer?! Talk about reasons to be hopeful!!! Did you know that musicians' brains function on a higher plane than us non-musicians? Same with people who speak multiple languages...recover better from damage...less prone to dementia and a whole host of other wonderful traits! I learned that in neuro in grad school. No hyperbole! Plus you're cool!

Remember that every time you are playing one of your instruments, you are likely soothing or awakening someone's soul! What a glorious gift! I can't play anything. I admire that talent greatly. I love having musicians around me. Bravo you! Seriously

In honor of Jennifer1967 and all those wonderful musicians out there in the world. I am going to share some more music which I find is good for my soul...spirit...whatever you like to call it...that invisible something which propels us from one day to the next...which will propel us right into a new year!

YouTube

Your precious love, Otis Redding

On the positive side, I do have a plan this year. I have goals that I could reach with the support of friends and family. That's about it, I don't have much hope, though. I may have a little bit, just not as much as I usually do.

Thank you for sharing MissDenim and what a great profile name! I picture you with your own denim clothing line...constantly on TV being interviewed about how you made YOUR denim the "must have" denim of the season

You say you have a "little bit of hope." I believe that a little bit of hope can take us a very, very long way. Hope is such a powerful medium that even a drop or two can change futures, resolve conflicts, improve health, and lead us to exactly where we want to be in life. May it happen for you Miss Denim!

If you feel comfortable sharing what would make 2019 feel like YOUR year, go ahead and put it out there on the thread and into the Universe. Maybe something amazing will happen?!

Does anyone out there have a hopeful thought or song for Miss Denim or anyone else feeling like their hope may be wavering a little bit this year?

Always remember that a sense of connection is a powerful antidote to uncertainty, loss, or despair.

There are no right or wrong answers here. We are all in this crazy gig we call Life together

Yeah, I guess you are right. A little bit of hope can go a long way. I'm not sure I'm ready to put my goals out on a public forum yet, therefore out into the universe. I will share it with a few people though.

Happy New Year!

It is complicated but I would be happy to do that but... here is the thing..

As you reduce your calories and say lose 30 lbs... my BMR reduces. I think perhaps substantially. So my last major diet I was left having lost weight but I could not eat more than a certain amount or I would gain, and gain fast. At this point you are kind of trapped. Living in the world you cannot completely abstain from high calorie items. And if your metabolism is so suppressed that 1 brownie can make you gain weight, then you are in trouble. And that was the way it was. It is also difficult for your metabolism to go back up if you are eating a small amount.

Also, once you get to this point, whether it is your body or your mind, I find that you are made more hungry. So it is easier to slip.

In 2012 to 2013 I lost weight but I also made it so eating more than 1000 calories would have me gain weight. For over a year I struggled to keep eating that small amount of calories and finally I got sick and could not focus on it, and gained 15 lbs in a 3 week period. And I could not lose it.

I gained it all back. Physically there was no choice.

A few years later, I tried another diet and was depressed to discover that after 13 weeks the exact calories that had resulted in weight loss.. no longer did. The diet people told me to eat less and exercise more.. but I knew that was a recipe for disaster. As I would just end up in the same position I was with the other diet. Suppressed metabolism.

So knowing this I tried a 13 week loss period to be followed by a 13 week eat normal period, but when I ate normal again I did gain too quickly. So that means that my metabolism reduces in the 13 week period.

I have had my metabolism tested three times and the basic amount they say I have is 1550 cals -- this is at my full weight after a period of eating normal. So if my metabolism reduces by just 20% that drops me to 1240. If you happen to have a higher metabolism and go on a diet and drop 20%, you might not notice because you have this higher metabolism and would still be losing.

So I am going to try one new thing , it is going to be eating less for two weeks and eating maintenance for two weeks. The goal with this is to keep the metabolism from reducing. I read a study that did it this way and people lost more weight than just regular dieters because the metabolism didn't reduce. This will make for very slow loss... but, likely, it will avoid gaining it back because your metabolism will not reduce.

New Years Eve is over now. Today is the New Year. So far, so good! Right now I'm doing laundry. Perfect time to do it. Last night it was very cold, windy, and some passing showers. I just happen to wake up 2 minutes before midnight. I don't know what woke me up, it was quiet at that time. And then midnight came; and for the first time in almost 20 years, no noise in my neighborhood! So I guess I'm off to a good start for the year! There were noises off in the distance, but could barely hear it. And I have excellent hearing!

HAPPY NEW YEAR (2019) TO YOU ALL!

mine is....

what's the point of 2019 and a new year, when the last 15 or so years for me have been nothing but depression

I really can't see myself going through another year of... well, nothing's happening, the days are just passing by- before you know it 2019 would have past and I'd have accomplished nothing (this is made worse by not knowing what I want in life)

can't think of a flip thought

just that maybe this forum will be here for me.

Hello Raging Vortex. Thank you for sharing your truth. That takes strength and courage. Here's a flip for you:

"I feel disillusioned about my life right now but disillusionment is useful and powerful because it takes me one step closer to the truth. I am one step closer to the life I desire.
I am still alive and therefore have the gift of more time to find my path to peace and joy. Last year, it felt like the days were just passing me by but this year will be different because I am going to choose a life of intention. I will choose a few things in my life which I'm not happy with, write them down, and then start thinking of possible ways to change those things. I can also ask others for ideas and support. I am not alone.
In the last 15 years, I have been living with depression but I was not depressed every moment of every day and night. There are things I enjoyed such as......(your list, big or small) and I will be sure to do more of these things this year.
Sometimes it feels as though I have accomplished nothing but I have actually done many things including making new friends on PC and....(your list, anything at all).
The last 15 years have made me a stronger and kinder person. I care about the suffering of others because I know what if feels like to suffer.
I know I want things in my life to change. I know I need to start actively trying a new approach. Being happy takes practice just like any new or unfamiliar skill. I am going to work on my "happiness skills." And I also know that real and important change occurs slowly over time so I will be patient and loving with myself. 2019 will be better than 2018 because I have decided it will be so. I am trying a new path."
