Do you think neglecting yourself to the extent of deliberately missing or cancelling hospital appointments or dentist appointments could be classed as a mental health issue especially if your reasons for not going are because you 'can't be bothered' or that you 'aren't in the mood?'

Asking out of concern for a friend.

Thanks

I know when I'm really depressed I cancel every appointment. I decide I don't need it because what's the point? If I truly don't care about myself, then why take care of myself?

I'm not a doctor and I can't tell you if your friend's in a similar boat as me or anyone with MI. Maybe encourage your friend to seek out some help from a therapist or counselor. More than that, just be there for them and maybe you can help them work through it (but don't quit taking care of yourself in the process).

I think it could be related to mental health, yes. It could be linked to poor sense of self worth. That's what I read or heard somewhere.

When you are in that frame of mind then yes I can understand that you wouldn't want to do anything, or at least anything that would help yourself - it's not a priority.

Yeah, it can be a sign of depression and similar.

When you are so physically tired, mentally tired, tired of yourself, uncaring about yourself to the point you don't care what would happen if you cancel the appointment or don't get the meds....

It's all the classic signs that you let yourself go when suffering from depression.

I'm so sorry about your friend, Depressed-Fiance Yes, I definitely believe it can be relate to mental health, especially depression. However, the only way to know is to go to a doctor and see how it goes from there. I'd suggest to give this advice to your friend. Hopefully he will listen to you, it can be hard in that state of mind. Just do your best, but don't be too hard on yourself: remember that he's the one that has to do the work. Sending many hugs to you and your friend

I’m sorry about bumping up this old post. I hope you don’t mind. Your title struck a chord with me so much.

I hope things are better for you now,

In peace
