Yes, my inner snake is always twisting, turning, looking this way then that. Seeking a victim! But you're right (((Fuzzy))). Only love can mellow the heart of even the most poisonous snake, I believe. But it sure does sap my vital energy away...*sigh*

What do you folks mean by your "inner snake?" Is this self-criticism?

Yes, SilverTrees. The inner critic, the inner snake[!] Our OP, Thirty shades, has given us a description in the opening post.

Oh! Thanks for the cue MoteofSoul; I just read the first post. Interesting. Personally, I would not wish to call any part of myself a "snake" or something with a negative connotation because that would likely promote self-loathing. I think self-appreciation and self-compassion are very important. Our inner critic also serves a useful purpose at times; just needs to have balance. I posted a psych article on how to find the balance if anyone is interested.

Silencing Your Inner Critic | Psychology Today

That said, if some folks find the notion of an inner snake helpful for your healing, fair play to you. Perhaps you think of healing as learning to tame or train the snake??

Yes. To perhaps love the snake so s/he may in turn grow to love us back - loosen his grip :-) Or at least that's what I believe it to be. Thanks for the link to the article as well, I'll have a 'peruse' at some stage soon, thanks.

I think the idea is not to actually “silence” the “snake”...

It may be part of us...

AS IS

I think everyone is very individual.. which is why I think bog standard CBT isn’t a “miracle cure”

I found CBT very useful at one stage in my life. Now, I feel that meditation takes me much farther than CBT could. But each to their own

I cannot tolerate medication due to extreme allergies. This does not make me happy.

Some would not even be ‘alive’ at this point...

Hi Fuzzy. If this was a response to my post, I was referring to mediTation, not medication. Peace to you.

Hi SilverTrees
You’re right, papa bear was posting for me earlier on and he misread it. I’m trying to teach him how to post. I dictated what I wanted to say. My paws weren’t clean so I couldn’t type. I do try meditation sometimes. Sorry about the mistake. peace

@SilverTrees:

Yes, SilverTrees. I've found meditation, mindfulness, CBT, self affirmations, definitely have their place depending on the person, medication too. Glad CBT and meditations are helping you.

With me, because my mental illness [and I do call it an illness - it's certainly not wellness!] is very strong, at the end of the day it's really only the medication and the will of a Higher Power, propping me up[!]

But I have found that simply by venting, sharing my thoughts, be they negative, positive or neutral, has a funny way of giving me something I feel is often missing - a sense of self acceptance. Very important in many ways, probably for others as well. I believe it's the concept behind the idea of 'As Is' which you read in the Depression forum here sometimes too.

So that's why I like this thread, SilverTrees. Because it offers a platform for venting, expressing, supporting, for this particular inner struggle and perspective.

Just hoping this may offer you an insight into "Our inner snake..." friend.

Peace and wellbeing to us all!

since I can’t take medication... and I know I’m not the only person who can’t take it...
I find being able to vent here particularly valuable....
Being able to vent is one of the avenues that isn’t denied to me...
(Meds, pets, cubs, supportive parental units.. I do not have...)
I’m very appreciative of all who post here to support others....
Particularly with reference to our inner snake....
I think those with non supportive parental units probably understand the “inner snake”
It isn’t something that is likely to be found in a cbt manual..
