When I’m tough on myself for having depression or for not being a certain thing I am simply repeating what those who harmed me did. When I’m tough and cruel on myself for being suicidal, I feel more suicidal.
When I judge my potential I am mimicing what some who harmed me did. I’m not interested in potential. I am a human not a machine.

I don’t like “tough love” ... it’s not love at all

Same here. In my case, relying on my peculiar dysfunctions, I lean on my depressive apathy to "greet" such feelings as semi-regular visitors and let them stay and go as they please. "Arguing" with them only strengthens them.
