Question May 15, 2019 at 12:52 PM
  #1
I was thinking about how depression can lead us to feel separate or disconnected from our own selves. At least, that's how it often feels for me. I found a wonderful notebook with 3000 questions to help you know yourself better. After all, the only thoughts and feelings you are guaranteed to live with for an entire lifetime are your own!

My depression has been worse for several weeks now. Last night I started my 3000 questions and I felt a bit better. I thought I could start sharing the Qs here hoping they will help others. Maybe a nice way to get to know other members too? Feel free to join in.

1. What is your idea of perfect happiness?

peace, hope, togetherness, love, and purpose

Excellent thread! Perfect happiness to me is being at ease in my own skin, being connected to the world and to others, radiating love and light, calmness and serenity, contentment, hope and massive amounts of love.

2. What draws you to science, Mr.Chemist?

I believe we all are different. That we all come with our different abilities, interests and thought processes. Different people may perceive some of the more complex phenomena of the world (such as social interactions for the typical teenager, or a theory on quantum gravity for the physicist) and so whether we like it or not, it may be a fact that we all (or at least most people) are born with different interests and passions.

It is not necessary that it comes from childhood. As far as I could remember I was passionate about science. Going back to the age of five or six. It's thirteen or twelve years later and I've fallen apart, gathered myself again and repeated the whole process but I am proud to say I am still a science student.

I do not believe childhood or even your genome defines you. I believe you are what you want to be. You don't like astrophysics? There's always business out for you. And you'll be far more successful as a businessman (as a typical business is richer than the average person) than you'll be as a scientist. Why? Except the most successful and well-known scientists of the country, nobody is really as rich as someone who owns a business of appreciable size. Even better? Be a doctor (also a type of scientist in my opinion) and also manage or found hospitals or anything similar.

So yes I think I am "naturally" drawn to science. I believe you are what you make. Attempt to thrive till you make it! That is the secret of life.

Just so you folks know, the questions are pre-written in a notebook I found designed to help people know themselves better. If you'd like to add your own Qs, no problem. Maybe you can use a letter system to label them instead of numbers so it doesn't get too confusing?

Here's Q2:

What is your greatest fear?

My greatest fear is that Hell is real and I'll go there when I die. I would rather life just end I think. Even the idea of Heaven scares me, because it's "forever." I used to lie awake worrying about forever when I was a kid.

Thank you for sharing DownandLonely. My greatest fear is winding up alone forever while alive I mean...to me that would be hell. I wonder if you have ever read 'The Denial of Death' by Ernest Becker? I think you may find some solace in those pages. I personally don't believe in Heaven or Hell. I think my energy will head back to the stars in a different form when my body dies...not a conscious or knowing energy like humans...more like being a basic part of nature....just as when a plant or animal dies. Though I realize that the idea of a loss of consciousness is terrifying to some people. That doesn't sound like your fear though...you're afraid of being trapped, right?

Thanks, ST, for the OP. These questions may also potentially be useful as writing prompts. Well, here, obviously, but also writing outside of PC!

My greatest fear is that I'm going to be incapacitated by my physical illness. I've had a slow, yet life altering progression so far, but I fear it is escalating and will lead to me being unable to take care of myself.

Hopefully, that won't happen - but it's my greatest fear.

That I am dead, all of this is an illusion and I am in hell. And this torture will go on forever. One after another, creative ways of me suffering for an eternity. I may have a version of Cotard delusion. It's ironic I "think I know it."

Edit : I also do not believe in God or any religion.

Question 3? (I'm very interested to see all the questions!)

I deplore my ability to torment myself at times with my own thoughts and yet I am much kinder and more understanding toward others.

Ah, yes, the inner self critic/task master. I know that PITA all too well! But, you're right, you are kind and understanding to others.

Folks, feel free to give me feedback for how you'd like the 3,000 Questions to be posted....one at a time....a few or more at once?

My vote is - one at a time. Also, maybe post a new one every 2-3 days to keep it fresh (fresh as in keeping the thread relevant, so it doesn't stagnate). IF that is doable for you.
