I’m feeling a bit like.....
What is the point...
Why share...
Why not stuff it up and be “strong”

I was just now thinking of a book I read a long time ago

In the authors opinion Depression is caused by 3 things

Self pity (fairly pejorative words imo, what is this.. beating self up even with mildly negative words isn’t a proven treatment for depression.. or is it?

Other pity (as in feeling sad for loved ones who are suffering... I would say that feeling empathy is healthy (?)

Self blame (maybe accepting the abusers’ version of the “truth” - that we are a “bad or useless person”

Any thoughts?

When asked how I am, I’ve taken to start saying, “I can’t complain.” See, if I ever do complain IRL and on PC, I get criticized for it.

Interesting.

It sounds like you have summed this book up pretty well Fuzzy.

Pity and blame (It's not that easy to sum up depression IMO)

Depression is not a choice. We are human and have feelings. Trapped negative emotions can cause a lot of pain.

We are strong to live with depression.

As I just said to someone else, negative emotions aren’t a “weakness” - they are a result of pain and trauma

It’s disappointing (understatement) when mental health workers in real life discourage our authentic expressions, just as family have done

IMO..... being open (for many... maybe not all, I am not an “expert” ...) is an important first step to healing. Certainly much more helpful than bottling everything up. Or it can be a way of surviving. Again much more healthy than bottling everything up or “acting out” in self destructive ways... and I’m not judging anyone who uses any self destructive “coping” mechanisms as they may be called... those too can be a way of surviving.
