Question Jun 16, 2019 at 03:12 PM

Depression can leads us to feel distant or even split from our souls. (I don't mean that in a religious sense though it is for some) Have you folks seen those 5 year journals? A question for each day of the year and then you can compare from year to year. I bought a couple and thought it might be fun to share. This notebook is called Q&A for the Soul. Feel free to join in with your own responses.

Can you escape your racing thoughts?
Or let them outrun you?

Meditation helps me with racing thoughts. At times when I am too weary, I just tell myself "the thoughts can do what they'll do, I'll just leave them be for now"

I can, unless something new happens and it really bothers me. I have worked HARD for the past several years to get through my fears and the toxic waste my family pummeled into my head.

I sat down, almost daily, and typed out what bothered me and worked to accept what it was or how I felt about it. I kept going every time something negative popped into my head. I took years to get through all of that carefully pacing myself, but I slowly began to feel happier and I saw improvements in my life.

So, now when something happens, I focus on getting through it so I can come up with solutions.

That is the best part!! Once I accept what it is or how I feel about it, solutions pop up in my head. That is how emotions benefit us. They let us know what is going on around us and how we can solve problems. It is the COOLEST thing I have ever experienced!

Honestly, once I repeated it enough, it is so easy now! But, I had to get through minefields first.

Even when I was very little, exercise has been a form of meditation for me. It still is.

I am glad it is getting easier for you! I have a lot of work to do to get to this point.

If the reason for the racing thoughts remains, it will never go away. For instance, if your child is disabled and cannot take care of themselves without help, so long as they either rely on you or are struggling, you can't dodge those thoughts because they are your true reality. Medications can dampen or mask them but not get rid of them. Sometimes our racing thoughts help us solve problems but many times they are too much for us to handle making us unable to focus on things that must be done.

I don't think you can outrun them. That only causes other problems like addictions and/or fooling yourself to the point of harming yourself or others.

Fooling ourselves can be a real problem. Sometimes it is easier to live in a world of fantasy than being fully engaged and present at all times. The world is full of distractions.

Thanks for sharing Tuned Out I think the author suggested that people may be able to let their thoughts outrun them....that's different from trying to outrun your thoughts. The former would be more along the lines of mindfulness or radical acceptance imo. Yes, I agree, we cannot run from our thoughts.

Are you living "deliberately" like Thoreau?

Honestly, not as much recently. I need to make that a very deliberate goal!

Can you sit with absence?

Yes, but sometimes it's very difficult.

I knew Thoreau was an American philosopher who loved nature and advocated for preserving it but didn't remember much else about him so here's some info:

Thoreau gravitated toward Stoic philosophy, Hindu and Buddhist insights, and European idealism and romanticism; he was an eclectic thinker weaving together various philosophies to formulate his own unique strain of American thought......
Thoreau’s philosophy seeks to bring out the uncommon in the common. This is the approach guiding Thoreau’s philosophy, but in his deployment of it on diverse topics, Thoreau’s creativity offers startling observations and insights. His creativity, his highly refined prose, and the autobiographical origins of his writings often conceal Thoreau’s philosophical rigor; but woven throughout his texts are the concept of wildness and Thoreau’s ceaseless attempts to celebrate and elaborate what it means. From his antislavery essays to his travel narratives, wildness is the recurring philosophical theme. (Thoreau, Henry David | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy)

I think Thoureau liked to spend time in nature and is one of the people who convinced our country's leaders to establish the National parks (or some form of it). I used to spend lots of time in nature (my backyard was the National Forest, the field in front of our house, the local rancher's corn field in the Summer/pasteur in the Winter). I miss it and my husband and I hope to spend more time in the wilderness someday. Wanting to live simply and spend more time outside is one area in which my goals may be similiar to Thereaus.

Absence of people or activities? I can sit and be by myself but I usually can't just sit without doing some type of activity. I use activities like walking, yoga and watching TV to relax.

That's the beauty and fun of the questions, @TunedOut. You may interpret them any way you like. That also reveals something about each of us....another way to learn about each other....hopefully that didn't come across in a mentally-stalking type fashion!!
