Oh goodness yes! Even non-depressed people do this all the time, right? Often it's just not helpful at that moment, and with that person, to get into it all.

It's not necessarily faking. It's saying "not now". At least, I'm sticking with that.

Although a couple of months ago someone asked how my week had been and I simply couldn't pretend otherwise. But I didn't want to unload on them. So I said, "Rather awful actually, but I don't want to dwell."

Don't mind me. I'm just rambling again as per my tag line.

Hugs, everyone.

I do it all the time too, Thirty Shades. Many years ago I read a book where the author said, "Phony joy is so much better than real depression." I suppose it is, just from the social ease angle.

Isn't it dishonest though? I rather have real depression than phony joy. Call it as you see it. However I agree with not wanting to unpack your heaviness on others. But, hell if they ask me how I'm doing... I have to come up with a fake answer to save social face? Nah, I can't let my depression, loneliness, sickness whatever you want to call it make me dishonest. Successful psychotherapy is primarily about honesty and pursuing honesty and truth at all costs. I don't have the answer, just an opinion.
