Default Horrible depression in the morning that improves at night

Does anyone experience mood fluctuations throughout the day? I wake up with terrible anxiety and depression but when I can manage to get up out if bed and go, my depression often improves within am hour or two. In the afternoon I experience a “slump” which I think is common for most people whether they have depression or not, but I find myself counting down the hours until the sun sets, because I (almost) feel like myself again. I kind of feel like a vampire! I think it’s just a relief to know that I’ve made it through another day and to savor the task I managed to accomplish, and to be “off” for the rest of the evening. “Night me” tends to feel more energized and optimistic about the next day, and I often end up making plans that “morning me” can’t follow through with.

Dear Rosepetal99,

I experience this too. You might want to do an internet search of something called "cortisol awakening response." Perhaps this has something to do with it. I don't know. I read somewhere that depression sometimes manifests worse early in the day and improves as the day and night wears on. Perhaps I am wrong about this. I am not a doctor or medical professional, so I don't really know. Sorry this is happening to you.

Sincerely yours, Yao Wen

I have something similar. I don't know if it's a physical thing or not. I always wonder if it's because I hate facing my To Do list so much. I wake up expecting to either be in agony over not getting things done as usual, or will be miserable doing them.

In the evening, I don't feel so much pressure to do as much since it's either finished or I've determined to put it off til later. So my mindset likely contributes.

I also read that dopamine levels are lowered when you wake up but that was just some random thing on the internet and I have no idea if it's true....

I experience that same thing and have been looking for answers as to why it's like that. I get the most crashing depression and anxiety when getting out of bed. Yet, I feel much better during the day and night. What's weird is that I get those feelings more on Saturdays & Sundays (the days I don't go to work).

I read somewhere that, for the mornings, I can be dehydrated and hungry (possibly low blood-sugar) and that's why I feel bad. Makes sense since I can go six or more hours without food and water. How would you feel if you go six or more hours straight during the day without food and water?

One time someone told me that the reason why I feel better at night is because, even though I get dreaded feelings, I made it through the whole day without much going wrong, at least the major stuff. That makes sense to me.

Yeah, i get that too. I wake up depressed and it's hard to get going. It takes several tries to get out of bed. Sometimes i lay around all day. Then at 4:00pm or 5:00pm i start feeling better and am active til midnight. I think it's because the daytime belongs to chores and errands and tasks and i can't face that. But the evening belongs to relaxing and i enjoy that. I just don't have much energy.

Have you had a sleep study to be sure there’s no breathing problems?

Yes my symptoms change throughout the day, don’t forget to do a self check about just simple self care as well “Have I drank enough water?” or “Have I eaten anything today?” You’d be surprised how much affect dehydration or low blood sugar can have on your mood.

Sometimes have anxiety that is pretty bad in the morning and then feel much better after lunch. It’s as if I’m relieved the work day is half over and start relax some.

That's very much my situation as well. Mornings tend to be awful if I need to get up and face the day. At night, somehow the stress is less, perhaps because activity has died down and most are sleeping. The quiet helps, both literally and figuratively.
