I have been dissociating a lot recently, and normally I just notice the gaps in time or extra wounds. However, lately I have noticed that if I close a jar, bottle etc. whilst 'not present', I either have difficulty opening it again or can't open it at all. Is this something others have experienced?

physical strength comes using ones muscles. every human being has thousands of muscles in their body. the muscles are what moves your fingers, toes, makes your heart work your other organs work.. if your muscles in your hands are not strong enough to open jars and bottles you can improve this by going to physical therapy where you can learn special exercises like lifting weights, picking up and putting down objects. opening and closing objects, working with zippers and buttons, jars and bottles, flexing and using your muscles is what builds up muscle strength. my suggestion is if this continues to bother you contact your doctors who can do tests like nerve conductivity, muscle strength tests, that can tell you what exercises and physical therapy you may need to be able to open jars and bottles even when you are dissociated. your treatment providers can also help you with mental exercises like breathing and grounding so that you dont have so much dissociation problems. |

I've been told that one of my alters is incredibly strong. I've also been told that a few of them are fast. I am neither haha.

Yes, absolutely we experience this. In our system different alters have different ways of using the body, including different handedness, different physical skills (one is an athlete, others are hardly able to move the body at all), and ways of moving (walking/running etc). T says she can tell certain alters are present by the way we physically move when we walk into the room. One of our often-present tweenage alters has very good mastery of gross motor skills but has shockingly bad fine motor skills. But she is very strong and capable in moving the body quickly, much more so than any others of us.

Yes, I would agree that some of my parts are stronger than others, and are more likely to use their strength.

Just something I noticed in this thread... poster is asking whether "dissociation" affects whether a person can open or close jars....
the thread is not asking whether people can have "alters" that are strong or weak... here where I am the definition of "dissociation" is feeling numb spaced out and disconnected as a result of being triggered. example... I sometimes feel numb, spaced out and disconnected during thunder storms.... but this does not affect whether I can open or close jars. Another example... fear of heights causes me to dissociate (feel numb, spaced out and disconnected) but this does not affect whether I can open a water bottle while standing on a mountain summit after hiking up a mountain trail and looking down from the summit. Yes I had alters that some could open jars and bottles and others could not but this was not because of strength. it was because that was their sense of agency, who and what they were did not require them to be the bottle and jar openers.... example part of Rainys sense of agency was being be able to change out of wet clothing after a rain storm, make something to eat, get something to drink and sit down with a blanket to watch tv (all of which entails being able to work buttons and zippers, untie shoes, open a jar of peanutbutter and jelly, bread, open the milk jug, pour a glass or cup of milk... where as Reds sense of agency was to hold and express anger which did not entail making meals, changing clothing, so Red did not and could not open jars and bottles. not because this alter was not strong enough but because it wasnt their job, purpose reason for being created. again just pointing out that the OP was not asking whether being alters causes a person to lose their strength. they asked if "dissociation" caused a person to not be able to open bottles and jars... not being able to open jars and bottles is not a symptom or side effect of dissociation. which is why my answer was and is no. my dissociating (feeling numb, spaced out and disconnected because of being triggered) did not affect whether I could or could not open jars and bottles. |

Me myself and I can’t open a jar let alone do what they do at work like build stuff. I hate it and they are always messing up my fingernails, getting cuts and bruises...our skin looks like moon craters.
But that’s why we have them, yes? |

For those understanding......A butter knife, hot water, and direction to turn it can affect those mixing in to improve processes. To get it open fast, to get it open the older way, and for confidence of those remembering. This is needed little crap like this, how is your therapist with understanding how crucial any of this is with succession of crap that can happen!! Hopefully pretty good!
