Hi...I am a new member to PC. (Joined yesterday.) I have been dealing with dissociation since I was young. Over 40 years. But I am only just now beginning to realize the possibility of DID. There are lightbulb moments of times in my life that now make sense.
This is a scary subject for me to discuss with others who don't understand...and I am pretty sure my therapist has never worked with DID before. So it is like a giant learning expedition. I will see a new psych at the end of the month for a fresh "big picture" evaluation, since I have had more than a dozen therapists and psychs over the years, many diagnoses, many medications, etc...but I always jumped or ran and started all over again, which kept the dis-order piece going. If anyone wouldn't mind sharing, how long did the discovery process take? There seems to be a wide spectrum of dissociative symptoms that cross over with other diagnoses. Some need medication and some might not. Sometimes things seem clear and other times I wonder if I am imagining things? Obsessing about what to call it? Thanks for being here. FearLess47 |

I'd never heard of DID, then MPD. People said I was *fun*, *serious* etc. Army brat so moved about every three years from later elementary years thru college. People never got to know me that well. Noticed after that I had *groups* of friends which later learned were clustered around different alters. Was in psych hospital for alcoholism when they dxed me but didn't tell me. They insisted I couldn't leave unless I had a therapist & an appointment. They introduced me to two options in hospital. Picked one & she had me come to one of her group meetings. I thought AA. After first meeting, told her, politely, I think!!,these people were crazy & I had to get back to my professional job. Not hanging around with these guys. They didn't remember stuff, etc. I just had a blackouts & I wasn't drinking any more. Not like them!! did a lot of not like them! She specialized in dissociative disorders..didn't know that was or what that meant. She realized nobody had explained it to me. She explained to me gently..Does this happen to you well yeah. T well that's called x. Do you do this..well, yeah. Thats called y. T: when you put x y z together it's called DID. Me: what's that! Lot more time spent in not like them mode. Long story to say, if dissociative disorder is your dx. Please get a T who specializes in the disorder & trauma. You don't need to train a T. IMHO you need a T who understands it better than you do.& knows how to help. Having a T who had heard it all before helped me talk about it too. Welcome to group. Please post often.
