****** TW ( talk of animal euthunsia, someone almost getting bit, etc.)Ok, so today I was talking to my therapist about how sometimes I feel like a different person. For instance my daughter almost got bit in the face once. I sat there watching the situation unfold kind of excitedly. The dog was acting strange I watched as she got closer to my daughter and I just sat there watching eagerly to what might happen. There was a part of me in the background that new it wasnt right but the other part was the main one up front. Other times when I felt like me I was quick to be a protective parent. I have been like this in many other situations as well. We used to have to euthanize kittens. I would avoid it or cry sometimes other times when I was feeling more like the other part (who I have been aware of since my twenties and named her Thorne) I would actually volunteer sometimes. Today my therapist said she thinks its possible I dissociate when Thorne takes over. How can I be in a dissociative state and still be aware of her emotions? (I cant ask a therapist because I am in between therapists right now.)

the bottom line is that this site has a disclaimer at the bottom of the page that means you need to contact your treatment providers for things like this. we can not answer about what things are in your body we can not answer about why things are happening in your body. we can not answer whether you have this or that, all we can do is share with you how things are in our own bodies and tell you to contact your own treatment providers. I know its frustrating for you to not get any real answers online like this but its your body not ours so we can not possibly know how you dissociate, why you dissociate, what happens when you dissociate, why or how you are able to be aware of thorne. those are things you need to take to your treatment providers. suggestion.... maybe you can write these questions down that you have about yourself and give them to your treatment providers at your next appointment. another suggestion maybe while keeping a list of questions to give to your therapists you will be able to read it a few times and come up with the answers yourself about what is going on in your own body. I do this all the time I keep a note book by my bed, any time I have a question about me and my problems I write it down, then later I read the question and start writing about the answer. journal writing and keeping a list of questions works great when someone is in therapy and have problems remembering to ask their own treatment providers things. while you are looking for a new therapist maybe you can do this too. unfortunately no one here can tell you what is going on in you and your body. what I can tell you is what things are in ..............Me......... in ............Me.................... When ............I.......... was aware of what was going on with my alters............My.........treatment providers called it part of my integration process. |

I can't speak to your experiences, but I personally experience both partial and complete dissociation. Complete being when another alter takes over completely and I am amnesiac for all of their actions and emotions, and partial being when there is some degree of coconsciousness involved. Sometimes with me two or more alters are present together, sometimes one might be watching another from the background, sometimes we might be aware of another parts emotions but not know anything more than that. There are so many different variations and levels of coconsciousness and dissociation for us, with one extreme being no dissociation at all and the other being complete amnesia. In between those two there is a huuuuuuuuuuuuge murky sliding scale of different levels of mutual awareness.
Generally speaking with regards to the overall population of people, dissociation only very, very rarely means complete non-awareness of a dissociated alter state. Does that help? |
