Hi. First post to this forum. I was diagnosed with DIDNOS last Friday. It's scary. It doesn't feel real. Am I faking it? I can't be. I didn't even know what this was until last week. I've discovered I have three states besides this one. They don't "take over" but their presence can be felt at different times. Does any of this make sense? I will see my therapist again in two weeks. I wish it would come sooner.

Hi and welcome.
It's okay. Don't panic. Everything is going to be alright! Labels are just things to describe something that is already happening for you. As far as ego-states go, everyone has different parts of themselves or sides of themselves. Its just that when trauma happens to young children they can't integrate their experiences, so those states or sides or whatever label you want to call them are a little more separate or dissociated from each other than with other people. But it's okay, with therapy people can resolve the trauma and lessen the dissociation between the states of self over time. It's not a big bad boogey monster and you're not a freak and it will be okay. Okay? It's a really good thing to know what's going on because then you can figure out what to do about it. And don't worry about the labelling too much. Sometimes people get a bit hung up on making sure that everyone is using exactly the wording they think it should be, but squabbling about that isn't super important right now. You T has told you, you have a dissociative disorder and you are feeling a bit freaked out by it all. THAT'S the important bit. Just breathe, and take it slowly. It's a lot to wrap your head around at first! |

tip you might want to talk with your treatment provider and ask them what this transfers over to in the updated standards. (new mental health system happened in 2013 treatment providers in the USA were given a two year grace period to change over to the new system of updated labels and so forth) here is a list of recognized Dissociative disorders here in the USA (your location says Colorado) Dissociative Identity Disorder Dissociative Amnesia Depersonalization/Derealization Disorder Other Specified Dissociative Disorder Unspecified Dissociative Disorder and in October 2018 a new label was added for all mental disorder categories called Other Mental Disorder - No Disorder, No condition. by labeling you DIDNOS (A disorder label that was never one for the USA and is not a label recognized in the USA at this time) your treatment provider may have accidentally stuck you in a box where you are going to have to do a lot of insurance fighting to get your therapy and so forth covered by insurance. and a whole mess of updated treatment options that wont be available to you unless you have the current diagnosis labels and numbers. Believe me this is not fun when insurance suddenly sends you a letter saying they wont cover meds, and therapy because they don't cover your diagnosis label (been there done that and why on forums I encourage people to talk with their treatment providers to update their files and diagnosis's) line in the sand is that with the NOS on the end of your diagnosis insurance plans are going to assume you have no disorder no condition simply because there are no diagnosis labels in the world now called NOS. the problems exist but the label doesn't, strange and problematic loophole, you are not alone people all over the internet are going through the same thing that you are going through. please talk with your treatment providers they will go over the diagnosis labels and explain which of the updated ones your DIDNOS label is actually called now. this way you wont have to keep feeling like you are faking it and people wont assume you are faking it because of the no longer used diagnosis label. |

You could make a "Denial book". Get your diagnosis printed off. Sit down with your therapist and write notes why this diagnosis is legit. Print off any documents you have from the doctor about abuse, etc.
