So my therapist said she thinks I should put whether or not I have DID on the back burner and focus on Internal Family Systems because it's more concrete. What does that mean? I told her I was having trouble with the DID diagnosis. She said to still check inside 3 to 4 times a day and say hey I'm feeling xyz what's going on with you guys but not be up in my head so much. She said my "bad" alter could be from something called object relation theory. This is where we are influenced by how we feel our parents perceive us. We then split good and bad and have no grey area. What do you guys think?

I am always in favor of changing things up if the thing you are doing isn't working. It seems that would apply here?

I think it makes sense, it sounds moreso as if she's trying to understand a specific part of you and your DID better, rather than putting it on the backburner entirely. I think understanding your "bad" alters/parts is one of the most difficult parts of the disorder and that this will be helpful for you.

I think that a ''bad'' alter could be related to object relation theory, where we are influenced by how our parents perceived us (or how we felt they perceived us) and good and bad is split. Checking inside would be helpful I think

just be more specific or they have no choice but to think certain ones have black and white thinking. It will take time sounds like a differianating of personage. If you got really good spiritual guidance and coaches they may try to change that so you don't have to go in really bad lulls, but know that could destabilizing the system and end up doing more harm than good, from my personal experience I can say that. In my personal experience really know when you are being pushed too much so that you can get OUT of therapy especially if the complaint is kind bad with memory isn't really worth it..

I don't think this IFS stuff is going to work. My therapist is telling me to only talk to my alters 3 to 4 times a day. How is that going to work? I just feel like I should treat ît as DID. It's not going to hurt me, is it? She isn't really trained in DID or IFS. She's .ca EMDR therapist.

Watch out for psychotic phases, but yea more than 3 to 4 times a day is advisable, especially if keeping them kind friendly

EMDR therapists can be highly trained in dissociative disorders. Learning about dissociative disorders is part of the training.
My T is trained in EMDR and uses a variation of IFS therapy with me. It just works for us in learning to understand the function of the alters. Which are mostly all be attributed to different action systems anyway. But that is what works for ME. If you don't think that using the concepts of IFS is going to help you, then talk to your T about it. Have you asked your T why she wants you only to talk to your parts 3-4 times a day? (For what its worth, my T has never advised me to talk or not talk to my alters a set number of times per day, so I don't think there is any magic figure of how often one should or should not do it). |

Well she EMDR trained by knows nothing about DID. She is telling me not to talk to them so often so I gain control over them. I hate it.

There are some therapists in this forest who have partial “training” in EMDR. Not exactly helpful. But they are free with the labels they throw out. I’m not sure that she is correct that not talking to your alters will result in your gaining “control” over them. I question if she is well equipped to help.

And also that maybe you're obsessing and focusing too much on trying to communicate with alters.Maybe that's why she suggested limiting the amount of time you spend stuck in your head. I have no clue about object relation theory. But I don't really consider any alter "bad", just maybe bad ways of coping which in some way actually helped in childhood. |
