Possible trigger:

My question is...when he terrified me so badly that I left my body...does trauma like that make it easier or more likely you will dissociate in the future?

Or is that just me..how I am?
Does encountering trauma once or twice make it more likely or easier for me to pop out of my body?

each person is different, you will need to contact your own treatment providers who can answer this for you as it directly relates to you.

for me it took repeated long term abuse before the age of 5.

All I can say is my experience. The brain is a marvellous organ. It has more tools to protect us then we can count. Dissociation is a tool...used in extreme circumstances. Used it before we even realized what it was or what was happening. Therapy helped us handle events without crossing the dissociation line.

That was my experience, too. I was ten years old and I had no idea what had happened. At one point I remember thinking to myself, ‘I’m not going to let this hurt me anymore..’ and *poof* I was floating up by the ceiling looking down. I had no anger, fear or feelings. I was just observing.

I never mentioned it to my parents or teachers. How could I find words to explain it? I didn’t understand it, myself.
