My therapist has taken back my diagnosis of DID. Im fine with that. She said I have dissociative tendacies though. She said she thinks that my internal chatter is something my Ego has created to protect itself from feeling uncomfortable emotions since the chatter happens mainly when Im nervous. Does any one understand this? Im mean I have never heard of that before. Many issues I have I have never heard of before though. Please dont say ask her. If we were just going to ask our therapist everything there would be no reason for this or many other forums to exist.

I bet you're glad she decided you're not DID afterall aren't you? It's a diagnosis you've been fighting against since the beginning. So is the dissociation part of your PTSD then or just that you tend to do it when nervous and it's not part of a disorder? Either way, it's good that you don't have DID.
Now,if you haven't already, you can work on handling emotions when you're nervous so you don't dissociate. Im sure what you experience isn't unheard of,Im sure you're not the only one. It's just a coping mechanism. No different really than any other coping mechanism that's become maladaptive. I smoke when Im nervous, some people drink, some do rituals, there's all kinds of things people do. You just happen to dissociate. Maybe just focus on learning ways to deal with your nervousness rather than questioning all of it? I really don't know what to say but wanted to make sure I responded to you. |

I think I used to do something similar. After a traumatic event I would start to mull over it in my head until I started feeling that sinking gut feeling and burning chest feeling that is associated with your body's release of cortisol. Even though it was a bad feeling I would numb myself and dissociate this way. I did this for years.
I think the important thing is to search for the explaination that helps you explain your life story. This may change over time, too. I think the basics of psychology are to help us make sense of our past so that we can move forward. If I know what happened to me in the past and why I behave the way I do now I can start to make changes that make me feel better and help me get along with others. If chatter in your mind used to cope with stress makes sense to you then go with it. Now you can work on being mindful and stop yourself when you start to chatter. Replace those thoughts with positive affirmations. Or, try and figure out a different reason why you chatter so you can make a change. You are doing great work! Keep it up! |

What you say is so true. If we are just going to ask our therapist everything, forums would be almost completely pointless. They are not just places for questions and answers either, there is some sense of community.
