I weighed this morning. I realized in a panic I had to. Today is ultimate goal day. I made it to goal so long ago (almost 10 months now) that it slipped my mind that when I started toward the end of summer 2017, I was 58 & 1/2 and concerned about turning 60 out of shape and overweight. I set my goal at 164 because that put me below a BMI of 25 at 5'8". I have actually shrunk to below that and at my physical in a little over a week, I could "officially" be 5'7". I need a weight of 159 or less to have a BMI under 25 if that's my height.

Anyway, today I am 60. Weight? 158 this morning (thanks in no small part to "pipes clearing" yesterday afternoon). Shape? I can do 2 hours of cardio non stop and I have visible abs (I still have trouble believing that last part). I think I made it.

I had a rasberry iced tea that had about 270 calories. Then some canned Chinese food. I think it was about 200 calories. Maybe a little bit less. Then my snack had 375 calories. We are having a big family gathering but I just plan on fixing a lean cuisine. My family is pretty understanding when it comes to my weight loss. They won’t care that I’m not eating the stuff they are eating. I will weigh tomorrow.

I am serious though when I mean getting back on track the day after Christmas.

@UpDownAround: Congrats! A job very well done! Abs? Nice. Not possible for me.

Over the holiday, I have taken leave of my senses. I need to get back on my “diet”, and exercise routine. I will weigh in tomorrow morning.

BTW I will be 60 years old on the first of next month.

@Tucson - New Years baby? I have gone well over every day and skipped the gym. But I think the actual damage when things balance out will be under a pound. I am hopeful I can "keep my head in the game" the next couple of days and try to do some damage control. A couple of very low calories days on the heels of a couple of high calorie days are not unhealthy; it's okay to average out across ~5 days or less.

I got brave and weighed this morning. It was after having 8 oz yogurt, 4 oz unsweetened applesauce, a couple of cups of coffee, a diet Coke and water. I had a major "pipeline event" that offset much of that but I still figured I am in the gray area where I could ignore a weight above 160. I weighed 159. So my long streak of not seeing a weight above 160 (top of my range) is intact without having to ignore a weight, though there have been a couple of days I purposefully did not weigh because I expected a spike to go over. Anyway, I feel pretty good about that.

I was 150.6 today. I feel very flabby. I feel like I look very bad despite the compliments I get from people. My mom says I look fine. I think I need to start toning. Can you gain muscle and lose fat at the same time? I want to lose 15 more pounds but I know you gain weight in muscle when you start working out. I bought an ab machine and a couple 10 pound weights and I plan on using them daily. I’m guessing 100 sit ups on the ab machine and 100 arm lifts or whatever with the weights will be a good start? I really am clueless when it comes to lifting and toning. I don’t know who to talk to without paying a ton of money or signing up for some sort of membership.

I guess according to the internet I should be doing about 20 sets of weight a day, and crunches are not good to do everyday. I’m still not too sure. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It is extremely difficult to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time. It is usually limited to small gains. The most successful way takes some patience; you need to lose the same 5 pounds over and over again taking about a month to lose it and a month to gain it back each time, lifting weights the entire time.

But you might be happy firming up and exposing what you have already. That's pretty much what I did.

IME, the best gentle intro to working abs is using an exercise ball. On your knees, sitting back on your heels, elbows at your side, hands on the ball about 2/3 of the way up. Roll it out it front of you, letting your hands roll off the top and forearms roll on. When you get extended and can feel it in your abs, hold there for a couple of seconds before rolling back. Over the course of several days, start holding the position longer and doing more reps.
After having done that a while, instead of sitting on your heels, start from leaning forward with your hands on the ball with it a little ways out if front of you and as you roll it, straighten your legs to go into a plank. Hold the plank longer and longer and do more reps over the course of several days.
Then moving on to other abs exercises won't knot up your gut and leave you in pain. For whatever reason, you can push abs too far without realizing it, impressing yourself because you are in some much better shape than you thought. Then the next day it hurts to do anything but lay on the bed curled up in a ball.

I bought one of those ab lounge chairs. Is that similar to the exercises you are talking about with the exercise ball?

No. I have lower back disc problems and have a lot of trouble doing crunches, which is what the ab lounge essentially does. Crunches bend at the lower back and abs. The exercises I do/recommend bend at the hips and you use your ab muscles to keep your back straight. Crunches are typically face up or nearly so (though some gym machines have you sit up and then bend forward) and ab bridging exercises (what I do/recommend) are typically face down or nearly so. The most well known ab bridge is the plank.

@UpDownAround: Excellent advice. Thank you.

I have consumed 2500 calories today. My scale weight is about 176. This means I have gained a few pounds over the holiday. I can see this as extra fat. Time to exercise!

BTW It has been chilly outside. There are freeze warnings for Fri and Sat nights. I will see what the temp is during the daytime on both of those days. If not too bad, I will start up my running again.

The short version was in that post. Longer version...

My BMI was over 33 and I was out of shape - huffing and puffing after not much exertion - in the summer of 2017.

I started tracking the calories, protein, carbs and fat in every single thing I ate. That's easier than it sounds because I use the MyFitnessPal phone app and web site. I made sure I was getting above minimum amounts of protein, carbs and fat and eating less calories than I burned (lots of calculators help with figuring that out). No special list of foods I can or can't eat, just my normal diet which I pretty quickly adjusted to portion sizes that allowed me to eat meals and a few treats i like. By march I had lost ~65 pounds and had a BMI under 25. It has not gone back over since and I am still tracking what I eat.

I started paddling SUP in the spring and paddled a lot, increasing distance and frequency through the summer. As it started to cool off, I joined Planet Fitness and have been going pretty regularly.

Somewhat related - I was drinking too much and gave that up 18 months ago.

So I turned 60 in the best shape I have been in since my late 20s.

This morning's weigh in was a shock - 155. With the light day of eating yesterday and recent "pipeline" events, i suspect my gut is nearly empty after staying full for several days. That would account for the big drop.

Heading down to FL around noon to visit my sister and do some paddling this weekend.

I didn’t weigh today. I had a string cheese and a diet Snapple at 9:30. It was 90 calories total. Lunch was a salad from Dennys. It was give or take 810 calories. Then my 3:30 snack was a bag of skinny pop popcorn that had 100 calories. Then I got too stressed at dinner and took two bites of baked chicken. I was really thirsty and I just wanted a diet Snapple instead.

I didn’t feel as flabby today. It may very well be in how I dress. My pants were not tight but not too loose. My shirt was semi loose. I was looking at cool sculpting online. It’s not terribly expensive. They have financing option. But I feel like a jerk because I’d rather have a procedure done then do the hard work myself to get toned.

Yesterday I had 2800 calories. My weight is 178 pounds, so even allowing for other factors, I must of gained several pounds. It is too cold outside, so I will make a trip to Planet Fitness. Once more back on a diet to lose weight.

I was 149.6 today. My calories equal to right around 1200 calories. I bought a pair of Maidenform and a pair of Jockey Spanks today. I don’t look flabby. They hold me in pretty good. It’s a better solution then cool sculpting.

Does anyone have any experience with spanx or shapewear? I have this pair of pants I can button but just barely. The pants just need to come up more. I’m hoping I can wear them with the stuff I got today.

I am going to start monitoring what I am eating with the added goal of losing weight as well as the primary goal of getting my blood sugars down.

I weighed 148.6. I had the usual string cheese and snapple. I went out to lunch and I had half of a plain skirt steak sandwich which I put at 400 calories, a small cup of French onion soup with no cheese on top that I put at 200 and a few fries which I also put at 200. I’m not sure if I’m correct on any of this. For dinner I’ll have a 3oz of ham which I’m putting at 200 calories. I worked today so I did burn some calories. I’ll see what the scale says tomorrow.
