I find it so hard to start exercising. I need to for so many reasons! When I start off I go slow and then speed up and am sore in so many spots. I mean terribly sore; have arthritis. Can't afford to go to a gym. Any tips would be most appreciated.

Maybe try walking 10 mins two to three times per day or try stationary bike for low impact exercise. If possible try water aerobics since this is good low impact exercise for arthritis. Also if affordable and possible maybe physical therapy. Good luck and hope you get some me relief for the arthritis.

Whenever I try to get back into exercising, I start with a Couch to 5K running program. It alternates short bursts of running with walking, and steadily builds up until you're running 3 miles (5K) without walking. But if you're having trouble with soreness from arthritis, it might be a good idea to start with something low impact, like biking or swimming. I second the suggestion on physical therapy.

What happens if you just keep slow, without speeding up? Have you tried swimming, restorative yoga, yin yoga, yoga nidra - I go to a yoga studio and I realize that if you cannot afford a gym, you also cannot afford a yoga studio, but there must be free options via YouTube. All of the above styles of yoga are relaxing and not exerting, and all very good for you. I think you might be a person who benefits from slow exercise.

I keep my favorite size 2 outfits hanging in the closet. I don't give them away. My goal is to fit back into them someday.

I have a small personal gym at home. A couple metal 10 pound weights I got for $10 each. A $35 ab cruncher lounge chair. A $30 swing machine. A $7 jump rope. Then I just do squats and pull ups. All the machines and weights expect for the jump rope were bought second hand at Play It Again Sports and Salvation Army. All were in good condition and were bought at different times so it was not a bunch of money at one time.

One thing I believe is that if you don't enjoy what you're doing, it's unlikely you'll be able to sustain it. So I think the first thing here, to my way of thinking, is to find something you genuinely enjoy. I know yoga has been suggested. Tai Chi is another eastern discipline that might be of interest.

Here where I live there are always adult community education classes that are offered at either no cost or minimal cost. If these sorts of things are offered where you live, it would be a way to try out different things & try to find something you enjoy enough that you're likely to stick with it. I've done both yoga & Tai Chi in the past. Currently my own exercise routine consists solely of walking our dog. He gets 2 long walks every day regardless of the weather. Lately it's been a real challenge!

I suggest this motivation: at least try! Do the exercise, even 5 times. 5 times more than 0. Walk a little. a bit is more than 0. You will know that you did everything you could, at least you tried. You can do a little more - do a little more. Then there will be no feeling that you are forcing yourself.

This, with a twist. What I found that I really love to do is SUP (stand up paddling). But that's a roughly 7 month activity where I am with a few really nice days in other months sprinkled in, but not enough to be my only exercise.

The twist is that motivation to be in good shape when I get back out again is one of the primary things that gets me into the gym. I do a lot of cardio to keep endurance up. I am not a huge fan of indoor cardio, but I do it to be ready for SUP, which I love to do. I binge watch Hulu or Netflix on my phone while doing cardio, I have to admit that vanity plays into it also; I am in the best shape I have been in for decades; I turned 60 with visible abs. I like being fit and trim enough to get in the gym and do the work.

I have arthritis in pretty much every joint. I have had both shoulders and one knee scoped in the last few years. One of the shoulders was done in January and I am still rehabbing it. On all of the surgeries the doctor took a picture of the arthritis in those joints on the way out as something of a disclaimer - they won't be pain free. I push through it and as I get the muscles stronger I have less trouble. Not a lot I can do about the hands, except put up with it unless it is really bad.
