I used to fast when I was young - 2- 4 days at a time. The idea was to stay really thin and slow my metabolism to slow aging. That kind of thing has been shown to work in rats, but not enough studies shave been done on people.
Then I got sick of it especially when I heard to only had to take pills like fish oil and grape seed extract. I also became a major exercise fanatic and was eating 5000 + calories a day with no weight gain. aside from the muscle I got from lifting weights. That stopped after 3 foot surgeries. I can barely walk some days now. Also the pain makes me crave comfort foods. I gained 40 pounds. Last year I lost 30 pounds with 2 fasts. I lost 20 pounds with a 14 day fast. After 2 months I had gained back 4 pounds so I did a 12 day fast and lost 15 pounds. But it was a bad year for foot pain and I gained it back. So I did a 16 day fast in July and now just a few weeks later I am trying another 14 day fast. I know if I can get rid of the pain I can keep it off. But I think the pain is here to stay. So is gaining 30 pounds then losing it in 2 months every year unhealthy? I don't think so. If I don't I might just keep gaining and end up on My 600 Pound Life. __________________ The Universe needs an Ace |

Over the past two years I have made an effort to increase my metabolism (had it tested) and when it finally got to the point that it should be... normal for my weight and height... my heart rate increased by 10 points (you can say 15) and BP has increased to normal / high. I have decided to slow my metabolism again. I feel better when it is slow and I just have to presume having low / normal BP is good for you. I am not fasting but I think I might consider it if necessary. |

Those seem like very long fasts.
I have heard good things about the 5:2 diet (2 days fasting 5 normal) it can reverse early stage diabetes in some people. I inadvertently have been fasting recently as a health issue has meant I have been unable to eat on affected days. I lost a lot of weight without meaning to this way. |

To me fasting has two things that give the health benefits: (1) giving your digestion a break and (2) giving your insulin resistance a break. If those two do not really occur, I am not sure it is fasting. The 5:2 means that you do 2 days eating 500 calories... but turns out, when I look more into it... the 500 can be spread over the day. While of course it is less food, it still causes an insulin release and digestion. Fasting likes to claim the benefit of Autophagy. However, they forget to tell you that doesn't occur until 36 hours have past. That is pretty difficult to do on an ongoing basis. However, I do think that fasting is going to turn out to be the way to have us live longer on mass. Both fasting and calorie reduction have shown major increases in life span in mice. Both are basically the same thing... less food. |

I do the 8-16 fast. Fast for 16 hours eat for 8 hours. It really helps. But sometimes I don’t want to eat and fast for 20-24 hours instead.

In the past I have fasted. Would do 3 days once a month and lost a lot of weight. But couldn't keep it up. Especially now I need to take my med with food, I want to fast but don't know how to take the med and still fast. Because I believe it's the 3 day fast that's best. Just water, no tea no coffee, gives my body a rest.
