I didn't notice a thread of this sort here. I know on an old WW forum, they had one. I found meal planning to be crucial for my dieting success. It helps me say "No" to extras a little easier than without a plan. Obviously, I sometimes eat something different, more than I should have, or even less than I planned. Mentioning those changes a little while later is important for me. Also, writing a few sentences or paragraphs about why/how I might have deviated is helpful.

I, personally, think tracking something is important. Calories, fat grams, carb grams, protein grams, or points. Whatever. Anyone who wishes to participate may consider adding up one or all of these things, but it's not mandatory. Sometimes just seeing the list of things helps.

I did not meal plan today, but I'm going to try to do so tomorrow and track nutrition info. I plan to use MyFitnessPal, but I know other tools are helpful.

OK, I'm going to be honest in the post below.

What I ate/will eat today.

B: Slice of homemade apple strudel (not diet) with 3 Tbs homemade whipped cream (the real McCoy); 1/2 cup Tropicana 50 orange juice; 1 cup coffee with skim milk

L: Scallion pancake; 6 small Chinese steamed buns; soy sauce/rice vinegar dipping sauce

D: Roasted pork with seasoning; roasted cauliflower with other veggies and a Greek yogurt roasted pepper sauce

S: Kind nut bar with chocolate on it; 4 medium pizzelles; single espresso (no sugar)

Liquids: Didn't count, but at least 8 cups of water (plain and zero calorie seltzer)

Exercise: No formal, but did a lot of housework.

------

The dang apple strudel is a major temptation. If tomorrow was a work day, I'd send some of it with hubby to give to his work friends. With the weekend ahead, I have to do something else. I know, we're seeing his friend this weekend. I'll give a whole bunch to them.

I confess that I did have another little slice of the apple strudel last night. Today I will limit it to breakfast only. It'll be good when it's gone. Luckily with hubby home all weekend, I won't super overdo it.

Today (modified slightly since earlier posting):

B (446 calories): Apple strudel slice with a serving whipped topping; 1/2 cup Tropicana 50 OJ; coffee w/skim milk; 2 strawberries and 2 Tbs blueberries on 1/3 cup low fat plain yogurt

L (293 cals): Skinned herbed roasted small chicken leg; cucumber tomato salad; thin slice whole wheat bread with Smart Balance spread; sugar free iced tea

D (362 cals): Two baked veggie stuffed Portobello mushroom caps topped with a bit of cheese; orzo salad; 1/2 cup peas & carrots; grape tomatoes; sugar free iced tea

S (83 cals): Espresso (no sugar); 1 cup fresh pineapple

Water: Minimum 8 cups. I'm always thirsty.

Exercise: Walk with hubby at some park.

TOTALS: 1,184 cals, 42 g fat (17 g saturated), 127 g total carbs, 26 g protein, low salt

Notes: A bit short on protein today. I always like a big breakfast because I wake up very hungry.

What I ate today so far

2 slices of pizza: 430 calories each so 860 total.
Liquids: diet iced green tea which had 10 calories, and sparkling water.

Total so far was 870 calories. I’m trying to figure out what to do for the rest of my day. I have a family function to go to tonight that will be serving stuffed cabbage but I’m thinking of just staying home and having fish and salad. It depends on how I’m feeling physically.

Mountaindewed, do you have a specific daily calorie goal? Sometimes I am happy even if I stay within maintenance calories.

I confess I had a small ice cream earlier today. I had to go to get stitches in my finger. The ice cream was sort of a "poor me" reward. I may repeat my lunch for dinner.

My goal is 1200. My weight is going up instead of going down even with the low calories which I don’t get. I stayed home from the function and I’m glad I did because I’m exhausted. I had the fish and salad without the croutons. So I’m at 1,190 give or take. I’m still kind of hungry but I’m drinking water and may just go to bed.

Edit: I had 3 chocolate flavored not chocolate coated mints and a lot of water and took my topamax and I feel ok now. I’m now in bed.

I'm joining this thread. As of now I don't count calories, but it would be healthy if I began to.

I was (too) thin early in life and chronically trying to gain weight; normal weight during childbearing years, then did some serious weight training, dancing (ballet), and bicycling between age 37 and 45. My weight during 37 and 45 was a standard 107lbs (I'm 5'6").

I was prescribed mirtazipine at age 45 and gained some weight. At age 48 I went on Seroquel. Over the course of seven years I gained just over 100 lbs. I am positive that I have metabolic syndrome from meds (specifically Seroquel).

I have always eaten healthy foods and I don't overeat, yet I keep gaining weight (currently on a small dose of Seroquel, coming off Abilify, just started Zyprexa). Dr. W (pdoc) doesn't seem to give a flying eff about my weight gain and associated health issues because of the weight gain. I suppose she doesn't know what to do, but I wish she would at least acknowledge my serious concern.

Sorry I've just posted this much - obviously I will benefit from this thread. I'll start posting foods tomorrow.

Mountaindewed, I'm glad you are happy with your decision last night.

BethRags, I'm glad you joined us here. I used to be a ballet dancer in my younger years, too That's terrible how Seroquel affects some people's weight so drastically. Have you considered getting a second opinion on your medications?

I hope no one feels they must count calories to participate here. And please note that I would never judge anyone's menus and ask the same of others participating here. The point is to just see what we're consuming for awareness. I look at mine not just for weight-related purposes, but nutrition.

My finger/hand injury has dampened my usual cooking enthusiasm (and desire to type), but I plan to do my best. I really can't chop that easily.

The dang strudel is almost gone. It will not be replaced with anything similar for a while.

B: Strudel with a little whipped topping; 1/2 cup Tropicana 50 OJ; coffee with skim milk; 1/4 cup fat free plain Greek yogurt with strawberries and blueberries

L: Will try to make the veggie stuffed Portobello mushrooms with cheese topping; spring greens drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar

D: Baked tilapia with lemon, capers, and fresh oregano; boiled new potatoes; tomato cucumber salad

S: Espresso; 2 pizzelles; ?

Will try to calculate calories after my finger heals a little. [Right pointer finger.]

I so loved dancing. I miss it.

I would like to speak with another pdoc, frankly. I have restrictions with my insurance, but I am thinking of speaking with a rep from my insurance and asking if there's some way I can have even 2 or 3 sessions with another pdoc, but not drop my current one (she's at the clinic where I go for all of my health care and therapy).

You are so thoughtful to start this thread and to explain your intentions. I feel sure that you are not a judgmental person, Birdie. I am very excited about this thread. I'm not much of a food person and live by eating small meals throughout the day because I am so burned out on cooking (did it for my family all the years my children were growing up). I really need to pay better attention to how many high-fat foods I'm consuming (lots of dairy, for example).

I think you have a potential plan regarding a second opinion. I should hope your insurance sees the reasonableness of such a request.

I went through a period in my life when music seemed to die for me. It's a long story. I am happy that in this recent year that has changed. I have begun to dance for myself in my living room, kitchen, and car. It's brought me happiness. I hope you will at least dance for yourself again, in some capacity.

Thank you! I do dance alone in my living room. Stupid weight gain has made me too self conscious to let anyone see me dance.

Okay, here's the food plan.

Between 4 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. I've eaten
-A chai/coffee/low-fat milk - 3 mugs over the hours.
-Plain peanut butter (nothing added except cinnamon I sprinkle on it) on grain bread.
-Mashed banana with goat milk yogurt, paleo coconut granola sprinkled on top.
-Some almonds and a couple of dates.
-A cheese & 2 eggs omelet.

As for the rest of the day, I'll be eating
-a mashed yam with a bit of butter .
-Lentil soup with 5 whole grain crackers.
-1/2 a Honeycrisp apple.
-Probably some coffee with soy milk.

-Plenty of water...I love water & drink a lot of it.

I find that I am ravenously hungry in the earlier part of the day. It's an awful feeling, like I'm starving. Reminds me of the hunger during the latter months of pregnancy. I attribute the extreme hunger to antipsychotic med.

Exercise
I have an extremely painful achilles tendon injury on my right ankle. I'm in physical therapy for it (first time in pool Tuesday, yay!). For the time being I have to limit my exercise to limping through daily chores (which does involve going up and down stairs several times/day, as I live upstairs) and yoga stretches, along with grip toning for my wrists and forarms.

Everything except the yam because I was full. I'm already seeing a pattern that tells me I eat a lot more during the morning hours when I'm med hungover than later in the day.

The lentil soup sounds good, BethRags. I like lentil and bean soups a lot, but my husband doesn't. I hope the physical therapy helps.

I fell asleep at 7:30 pm last night after eating 6 saltine crackers spread lightly with low fat onion chive cream cheese. I woke up at 3 am super hungry and made a PB &J sandwich on diet bread. Lower sugar whipped PB. Then...

B: Finally the last of the apple strudel! 1/2 cup Tropicana 50 OJ; coffee with skim milk.

Yet to eat:

L: Leftover veggie bread crumb stuffed Portobello mushroom cap with some cheese on it; spring greens with balsamic vinegar and olive oil drizzle.

D: Leftover baked tilapia with lemon juice butter capers oregano; 2 boiled new potatoes; cucumber tomato salad or similar.

S: Espresso; small fat free plain Greek yogurt fruit smoothie (w/a little skim milk & Truvia); possibly a small banana nut muffin, if I make them. Will use whole wheat pastry flour and lower sugar w/some Truvia.

Exercise: Short walk; dance inside house.

Totals (incl. PBJ sandwich & muffin):
1,143 calories, 49 g fat (17 g saturated), 149 g total carbs (24 g fiber + sugar alcohols), 52 g protein

Breakfast: an iced pumpkin spice latte. I didn’t realize it had 480 calories. That’s a lot for a drink!

Lunch: a cheeseburger and small fry from McDonald’s: 530 calories

Dinner: a No Name Steak: 270 calories.

Total: 1,280 if the drink is added correctly.

Exercise: I was at my very active job today so I was on my feet and moving around for 5 hours. Also I was very anxious all day which I’m sure burned something considering at one point I was shaking from anxiety.

Birdie, I love lentil soup with a baked potato on a cold winter night.

Ugh, I'm so sorry about the anxiety, MD.

Today:
6a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
-Coffee/chai/low-fat milk
-2 pieces of toast w/ butter
-Banana/goat milk yogurt/granola
-Date bar
-2 eggs
-Coffee w/ soy milk
-An "unbaked" cookie (oats, peanut butter, sugar, vanilla)

6p.m. until bedtime
-Lentil soup + a few whole grain crackers
-A pear
-A yam if I'm still hungry

Late night Seroquel XR munchies equalled 15 saltine crackers. They could be worse at 70 cals per 5. I also drank two small glasses sparkling wine last night with dinner. I need to limit that more!

Early morning hunger equaled a Kind bar and 1/2 cup Tropicana 50 OJ.

B: "Lightened" banana nut ricotta muffin; 1/3 cup low fat plain yogurt with strawberries and blueberries; 1/2 cup Tropicana 50 OJ; coffee with skim milk.

L: TBD depending on hubby's tooth situation.

D: Part of ham steak pan grilled; fresh pineapple salsa; mustard; spring greens and grape tomatoes; thin slice whole wheat bread; small glass sparkling wine, or not.

S: Espresso; spoonful whipped lowered fat peanut butter; slice low carb low cal bread with Smart Balance light spread and Truvia and cinnamon.

Breakfast: just a Diet Coke

Lunch: a Caulipower Pizza that has 760 calories for the whole pizza

Snack: 3 cookies 120 calories total

Dinner: spaghetti tacos. Which is just a spaghetti and meatballs Lean Cuisine and 2 Old El Paso Taco Shells 380 calories total

Total it’s 1,260 calories for the day.

Exercise: none except running errands.
