Before I was ever diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, and before I took anything for it, I weighed 185 lb. That was 20 years ago, and since then I was prescribed Zyprexa, then Seroquel, and finally Abilify, which I have been on Abilify for about 16 years.

I have not been doing well with the weight. Today I weighed in at 310 lb. I am not eating a huge amount of food. I drink a lot of water, but my doctor said it's not water weight because my ankles are not swollen.

I am not exercising vigorously at this point, and I know I should be doing more walking in general. But it's been really hard to walk and to get around because I am so heavy. I am very disorganized in my head and foggy brained, depressed and basically despairing many days, and that doesn't help me either to start exercising more. And I don't have the funds to join a gym. And it's winter. Hard to walk outside, even if I was motivated.

I need help. If anyone has any encouragement, please post a reply.

Tell your doctor exactly what you told us. Tell him this is not ok with you. Be angry if you have to. Overweight is a big health issue. If he is not willing to help you, change doctors. Find a tv program to exercise with until you can join a ymca or walk. Many insurance companies pay for all-gym services if you are a senior.

I was 100 pounds overweight once. I am on maintena shots. The best way to lose weight is to eat healthy- salads, less carbohydrates, more protein, and less fat. Also, I would start walking slowly anywhere and as much as possible. I lost about 80 pounds by doing this over 6-8 months. I was able to walk up to five miles a day. Also, when you are hungry, drink water to fill the stomach and eat small portions and more frequently up to five or six times a day. I would stick to eating roast chicken, egg whites, salad, low fat cheese, yogurt, fruits, and vegetables. If you need to eat junk food, try not to eat too much and decrease the amount you eat of it. You can eat popcorn that is air popped. Also, I drink a lot of hot tea now. I am overweight still but not fat and need to continually watch my weight due to my age and medication. I was pre-diabetic and had high blood pressure before. Now, my blood sugars are fine, and my blood pressure is fine. I wish you the best and hope that you motivate yourself to lose weight.
