I may (or may not) have a legal case against a psychiatrist in the Chicago area. How would I go about finding a lawyer, what questions should I ask him/her, etc.? I'm not very functional at present, and I don't think I can handle this without some guidance.

I'd ask the Bar Association or agency where you could get a referral. Good luck!

First of all, I would contact the College of Physicians and Surgeons for your area. If you have a case, they will initiate a grievance and provide you assistance (I lodged a claim against a previous psychiatrist and it ended with a serious reprimand against her).

There is the additional route of contacting your Ombudsman.

If you work, your employer should have an EAP (Employee Assistance Plan). Most plans provide for up to 3 free consultations with lawyers - which they will also set up for you.

Most larger municipalities provide for an 'centralized intake' where they can refer you to services including legal.

Martindale.com lists lawyers and their peer ratings. Try to find one that specializes in medical malpractice. You should be able to ask them for free if you have a case and they'll give you good advice.
