If a person takes an IQ test normed on the population of Chile (average IQ: 90) and then the same person takes another IQ test normed on the population of Hong Kong (average IQ: 108), will his scores differ?

I hate IQ tests and do not believe they accurately portray if one is intelligent or not.

They could.
Is it the exact same test normed on two different populations or two different tests each normed on a different population? Even if it’s the same test normed on two different populations (and therefore VERY culturally biased), if the test is taken twice absolutely there are vairiables that could impact test score each time. |

IQ tests here in america measure your own individual scores.... you know like how in school you had to take math tests, history tests, Science tests... IQ tests measure what you, yourself knows... examples .... when I took my IQ test I had to add subtract and multiply, divide. I had to tell the psychiatrist who the president of the USA right now was. The psychiatrist told me some words that were not matched together and asked me to remember them and then repeat them back to him when he asked me to. I had to make pictures with colored blocks, I had to read and write something. I had to tell a story of what was happening in some pictures. I also had to answer some science and social studies questions. the psychiatrist marked down when I reached so many questions right and wrong. then he scored my test and told me that my reading level was this grade and my math score was that grade and history grade, told me all the test scores, then he added all my scores together, then divided that number by how many tests I had to do and that gave us what my average IQ score was. just like in school when you had to do tests in each of your classes. thats what IQ tests are like. |

IQ tests were predominantly created by upper middle class white males. How many of the people taking IQ tests do you suppose are upper middle class white males? People like myself who were formally educated in a certain way tend to score very well on IQ tests. That does not mean I'm more intelligent than those who do not. It simply means that there is a close link between the tests I took and the exposure I've had to certain stimuli etc. My brother does not score well on IQ tests. He lives with undiagnosed dyslexia and really struggled at school. Yet he is one the most intelligent people I've known. The man is proficient in two languages (lives and works in a country where he is required to use his SECOND language for everything,) a musician, plays several instruments, writes his own beautiful music, and can put together computers from their basic parts...he has never bought a full computer...he buys the cheaper parts and assembles them himself. I would be lost! Those are just a few of his many indications of intelligence. Above average intelligence. Check out the neuro research on musicians and polyglots...it will blow your mind. Seriously! I threw out the whole IQ idea a long time ago. I'm all about EQ and CQ. Those are the 'Q's which really make the world go round Last edited by Anonymous44076; Mar 11, 2019 at 12:27 AM.. |

IQ tests are deeply problematic, Ziminia. You are right to question how they carry across cultures or countries. I would not recommend giving IQ tests much priority. Though if they are important to you, I hope you find the answers you're seeking. Good luck |

Many years ago I volunteered to conduct IQ tests administered to young school children. For part of the testing the children were shown flash cards of pictures of things or actions for which they had to correctly identify. This really pained me as I had to mark a whole population of children with whom simply did not know the correct vocabulary or even describe the items in question. Some of these children wouldn't even have seen some of these items. There existed a number of minority communities in the small city including children who still lived in log cabins or other crude homes out in the country. Anyway, show them a picture of a stove and they had no idea what it was - but they would have recognised a pot-belly one. Show them a washer and dryer and some of these kids had no clue. On an on this went. many of them didn't even possess a phone. These children then did badly. And it pained me a great deal. A number of the other volunteers - and the teachers - made disparaging comments about how stupid and lesser intelligent these children of other cultures were. Racist test, racist people. No wonder people like that had the viewpoint non-whites were stupid. Such frustration and anger on my part. Completely unfair.

Just the idea of taking a test in itself will make someone score better who is used to taking other tests. If you put papers in someone's hands and his work basically has no paperwork and it's ages since he went to school, of course he will score lower.

Agreed.....my X-H bragged about his high IQ but in reality he ONLY had a high IQ in a very small area (math & reading). He was dumber than a box of rocks when in came to anything practical or even something as easy as home finances yet he did well in calculus.

It’s so true. Some of the dumbest people I know actually have PhDs. I did an IQ test over Christmas and scored alarmingly low, but I know I’m not a dummy.

I am absolutely shocked at the prices they paid. Seriously? Half a million dollars to get your kid into college? If you have to pay that much, maybe just accept your kid isn't college material right now.

Lol....that money should be forced to be used to pay off real worthy students student loans since they have already used the money that way. If they are that rich to throw that kind if money around make that money truly useful for studernt who have earned their education. Then STOP this practice of allowing this to happen.
