Has anyone taken St John's Wort to help balance their moods?

No. It is not anything I would take unless my psychiatrist recommended it. This is especially important since it may interfere/react with my medications. Also, I have bipolar disorder. St. John's Wort has been known to have antidepressant qualities. Antidepressants can push me into hypomania or full blown mania.

My sister finds it helpful for mild unipolar depression. She does not take medication. I read that it is more helpful for mild-mod as opposed to severe but I'm no expert.
Always good to consult with a herbalist or naturopath because those herbal options can still be potent and they are not regulated by the FDA. Last time I checked they weren't anyway. And yes, as Bird Dancer pointed out, it could interact with other meds. |

I tried it ages ago, and it didn't seem to do much for me.

You have to be careful with it. Mixed with certain medications there are cases of people getting serotonin syndrome.

You need to talk to your prescribing doctor about any natural remedies or supplements. There are a lot of things out there that will have adverse effects if taken with the wrong medication.

I tried it many years ago. It made me manic. Please ask your doctor as others have advised.

I tried it before I finally went on an anti-depressant. It didn't help any.
