I don't think one necessitates the other. I do not equate racing thoughts with hearing voices.
I think we all have an inner voice. This voice often critiques us and can be quite harsh. It tells us we might not look okay dressed a certain way or wonder what will people think of us and so on. My understanding is that this is perfectly normal but it is when this voice takes over that things become alarming. I think so too that hearing voices entails hearing voices other than our own. Another example of a racing thought would occur maybe when we are super anxious about something. In my own case that would be staying awake all night worrying about how the next day at work is going to turn out. My mind runs incessantly through the various troubles that might arise and the ramifications of them. These are the sort of racing thoughts I experience. Can you tell us examples of the sort of thoughts you experience that concern you? |

thinking to myself really really fast.... I need to get milk at the store omg cant forget to drop off the electric bill did I get the shoes eagle needs for sports dang it where is my walllet, I sure hope so and so is ok I havent heard from them in ages. now where is that measuring cup. ... on and on and on worry worry worry thinking to myself these fast annoying thoughts. Voices.... toaster saying something pictures talking to me the tv making noises and words when I know its not off hearing noises in my head clicking, ringing, talking but I know the words are not coming from me, kind of like if you were in a public place listening to others conversations only those conversations are inside my head. fast loud thoughts I know they are my thoughts voices I know they are not my voice and I am not thinking nor saying anything. both of these can happen with many different physical and mental health problems and can also be a normal result of things like medication side effects, not eating correctly/ not getting the correct nutrients, not getting enough sleep. Another term used for hearing voices is also having delusions and hallucinations, being psychotic. having fast loud thoughts can be completely normal. example when I am in mania phase of my bipolar both of these things happen, when I am stressed out either or both will happen, when I am having a good day either or both will happen, when I dont eat correctly either or both can happen, when I dont get enough sleep either or both can happen. your treatment provider can go more in detail based on what your own individual diagnosises, meds and life style is. they will be able to tell you which it is or both for you. |

It used to happen when i had panic attacks. last time was like 2 months ago.
My thoughts would accelerate ALOT! Until they became so loud that i couldn't hear anything around me for them basicy. I know that they came from me and it all was in my head, the duration is like 30-90 secs. it just felt like 10 thoughts at the same time, rather loud in my head, completely overwhelming. I can't make sence of what they are saying/thinking, it's just like white noise in the form of thoughts. When i write racing thought i mean it like they "move" fast and i get multible thoughts at the same time-ish. If that makes sence... |

when I get racing thoughts I row my canoe around the lake, go for a walk, take some deep breaths and other things that I find calming to me. this stops the panic and racing thoughts. my suggestion if this continues to bother you contact your treatment providers. they will be able to tell you what you need to do to get this in control based on your own life style, mental and physical health problems, medications and what the root problem is that is causing your panic attacks and racing thoughts when you have a panic attack. |

Oh wauw thanks!
I couldn't really find any info about it elsewere. Honestly i was scared that it was the intial stages of a much worse disease. This calms me alot. I've told 3 treatment providers and they all answerd me rather "dodgy/avoiding" when it comes to this phenomenon. They say it's not a big deal but can't really confirm if it's normal or not.. Not getting a clear cut answer kinda fuels my anxiety right now :P -RG |
