I suffer from depression, anxiety, social phobias and a general discomfort with myself and my story. My family has been both supportive and detrimental to my progress with my mental illness. I choose and have always chosen a wholistic alternative approach to my healing path. I have gained meditative skills and coping skills, but struggle to maintain a healthy ingratiated life. At this point, breaking away from my family is not a possibility. Is it right for them to demand medication be part of my treatment plan? Is it okay for them to expect perfection from someone who lives with this type of hindrance?

IMO, the relevant question is, will it help you? Can you use it to your advantage?

Thank you for that question. Unfortunately, I do believe that there is a tremendous amount of spiritual healing that needs to be done for myself, in addition to taking medication. I have managed to stabilize my depression, my sleep pattern is as normal as my daily schedule, and my mood is tolerable. To help with my anxiety and catastrophic thinking, I have learned to reframe personal dilemmas with a positive outlook. I have learned to incorporate healthy black and white thinking into my day to day living. Yet, for me life is at times more challenging than other times. All that I have learned to better my mental health condition has not come from medication. I am here on PC, bc I struggle with my confidence and boundaries. I am seeking support of others- (and I am at the end of my data plan and I cannot go about my normal streaming activities). With mental illness being such a hereditary medical problem, I believe it should absolutely be the decision of the individual how they choose to seek help and support. Although, medication can help alleviate symptoms, I personally feel majority of my healing needs to start with understanding of self.

Have you tried it? If you have and prefer to be unmedicated then you may need to evaluate how you are effecting them and try to make adjustments such as spending less time at home (working, volunteering, going to the library). Are you working toward moving out? (planning, saving money)

And how is it going with the wholistic approach? How is it working for you? Are you stable then? Maybe your friends and family are trying to tell you something in the bigger picture.

All good questions. Yes, I have tried both paths. Meds for a short time. I had been prescribed Abilify - took that for a month or so. My second go I was treated for depression, ADHA, and anxiety. I then took a short break from life, started up again and returned to school. I found an amazing mentor, was engaged to be married, started on a career path -and again lost it all. My third go at meds- I was offered Zoloft and after hospitalization, I was prescribed an anti-depressant and anti-psychotic. Joining a support group for my depression was part of my outpatient plan. This was so many years ago - I am now in my thirties. I was diagnosed with depression and generalized anxiety disorder then. Since I have been diagnosed with panic disorder too. I do have a difficult time finding people I can relate with. A support group for victims counseling was suggested to me. I feel that my options are limited and expensive. I do feel like a burden, and everyday is a struggle for me.

Thank you all for your concern and support. I am slowing getting the help I need. When I was younger, I never imagined how much of a battle life could be. : /

I do feel like they have every right to suggest - but they can't FORCE you to do anything you don't like, @AB2371. You have every right to decide for yourself! If you don't like meds and prefer another approach, so be it. I'd say it depends on what you're looking for. Personally I think meds may help although I absolutely agree with you and the other wise, wonderful posters that they're not enough by themselves. I think they can help though. Still, it's YOUR decision! The important thing is for you to keep taking care of yourself like you're already WONDERFULLY doing. Keep trying your best! You can always PM me if you need some Advice and Support. Plenty of others will help you out here, I'm sure! KEEP FIGHTING AND KEEP ROCKING LIKE YOU'RE ALREADY WONDERFULLY DOING ALL AND ENTIRELY BY YOURSELF! Sending many safe, warm hugs to BOTH You, @AB2371, your Family, your Friends and ALL Of Your Loved Ones!

life is hard for everyone. different struggles but no one coasts thru unscathed.
perhaps your family sees things in a different light you do..as in maybe your sense of control isn't as good as it really is...ask them why? what do they see that demands meds? sometimes we can't see things that are off but others can. it could just be that people are used to getting meds for conditions and that is what they feel comfortable with..or there might be something else. if they suggest meds if interested talk to a md..maybe you just haven't had the right med..trying it for a month or so is not really fair you have to give the drugs a chance to work. it sounds like you have had serious issues..i'm glad your program seems to work for you but even you stated at times life is trying and challenging...why not go into those times with every weapon in the arsenal that's available rather then just a few? family may never understand and that's ok...they don't really have to..it is your health care, your decisions. it's nice when everyone plays together but that doesn't need to happen. why move away? are you an adult? over 21? your call. unless again, there are issues they are seeing that you are not. do you go to therapy? maybe have others join you and hash it out there. regardless, if you are an adult and paying your way then it is your call, but if it was me I would want everything that was out there to keep me in my best position to take on the world. |
