Heyo, im an 18yo female with bipolar disorder 1 and possibly GAD, for the past couple of months my teeth have noticeably been chattering both consciously and unconsciously. I don't know why but it is consistent throughout the day. I was wondering if anyone knows or could have an idea on why this is happening? It increases or is faster when I am consciously anxious but even happens for no reason or at random points throughout the day.
thank you!

Hello lovehurtsalot: I see you're actually a 3 year member here on PC although this is your first post. So a belated welcome to you.

It's possible, I would suppose, your teeth chattering problem could be related to something unrelated to your psychiatric diagnosis. (It may be worth getting yourself checked out medically just in case.)

Assuming there's nothing going on medically, what occurs to me is that this might possibly be a medication-induced symptom (if you are on some sort of psychiatric medication or other kind of medication for that matter) or it could perhaps be a symptom of your GAD. If you are on psych med's, it may be worth checking with your prescriber on this. If it's related to your GAD, then it may be a matter of working on your anxiety in therapy as well as learning ways to manage your anxiety. At least these are my non-professional thoughts with regard to what you are experiencing.

Here are links to 4 articles, from PC's archives, that offer tips for managing anxiety:

Are you on an anti-psychotic? Those can cause uncontrolled movements and your psychiatrist needs to know this is happening. If it is from meds it can become a long-term problem so your doctor needs to know and possibly adjust your meds.

Your pdoc def needs to know about this pronto. If it is med-related, he or she may need to make some changes to help you with this. Good luck!

Either physical or mental or both. Definitely an issue to work on.
