Well I didn't tell my GP that I have a mental illness but when she saw my arms and saw that I self harm she sent me for a psych evaluation.

She is nice about it. I asked her to prescribe my meds but she is not knowledgeable enough about one of them, so she said no.

Usually your Doctor will ask questions to try and determine if your safe. No suicidal thinking or self harm etc

Some primary care doctors might offer to start someone on a antidepressant... but beyond that a person should see a Pdoc.

My husband has depression and our GP prescribes his medication. Where as I have Bipolar and need a Pdoc since it’s a complex illness.

My primary didn’t care but I did sign a release A couple weeks ago saying they ( T, Pdoc, sleep doctor) could all talk to my primary. I only signed one because my sleep doctor was being a dodo head and not giving clear instructions on what she wanted. But this hospital system (both the psych and medical part of it) are pretty good at keeping mental health and medical health separate unless it’s obvious one is causing the other.
